BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 20, 2020)-The Lady Bears tennis team opened the 2020 season with a dominating 4-0 non-conference win over visiting Saint Francis-Pa. at Twin Lakes Club on Sunday.
Morgan State (1-0) started out strong first winning at #2 doubles with
Asmara Rose and
Averiana Mitchell earning a 6-3 win, and then at #3 doubles with a forfeit win to secure the doubles point.
Dana Santiago and
Jourdan Wallace were up as well in their #1 doubles match, 4-3 when it was called.
The Lady Bears up 1-0 went into singles play with a lot of confidence and that continued as the Morgan State won at the #2, #5 and #6 positions to clinch the victory.
Rose cruised at the #2 position with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Anouk Ma-Ajong of St. Francis. Freshman
Ana-Lei Kalawe, who was playing in her first career spring dual match, won for the Lady Bears 6-1, 6-4 over Camryn Rossa. Morgan State won at #6 singles by forfeit. Santiago and Mitchell were still playing when the Lady Bears clinched the match.
"Our coach told us that win or lose today wouldn't make or break our season, but we still needed to make a statement," said Wallace. "We locked in, fought hard, and left it all on the court."
The Lady Bears will look to build on their good start to the season when they return to action this Sunday at the University of Delaware.
