Volleyball Earns Third Straight Sweep; Defeats NJIT In Three Sets

HACKENSACK, N.J. (Sept. 7, 2019)-The Morgan State volleyball team, which is in the midst of its best season start in school history, recorded its third consecutive sweep of the season with its victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) on Saturday morning at Rothman Center.
 
Morgan State improved to 5-1 on the season with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-23) victory over the Highlanders and evened the all-time series at 2-2. NJIT (0-6) remained winless on the season.
 
Zoe McBride and Tylar Roberson, who both recorded double-doubles, led a balanced hitting attack for the Lady Bears. McBride tallied a match-high 16 kills and tied a team-high 12 digs, while Roberson added 14 kills and 10 digs, as Morgan State cruised to another three-set victory. Roi Wallace also picked up a double-double, finishing with a match-best 31 assists and had 10 digs.
 
Defensively Sophie Pajevic tied McBride with a team-high 12 digs and Jennevy Santos collected 10. Sara Brown had a match-high four blocks and McBride and Pajevic each had two blocks, as Morgan State held a 6.0-3.5 advantage in blocks over the Highlanders.
 
NJIT was led by Liz Benson's double-double of 19 assists and a match-high 18 digs. Olivia Welsch and Alahna Diaz had 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
 
Morgan State jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set and increased its cushion to 11-3 after back-to-back kills from Roberson and McBride. The Highlanders got as close as six points several times, the last coming at 21-15. But the Lady Bears scored four of the last six points to earn the 25-17 victory.
 
In Set 2, the Lady Bears broke a 10-10 tie with five straight points to take a 15-10 lead. NJIT responded with a 6-1 run to even the score at 16 apiece. Morgan Sate held a 22-19 advantage, but the Highlanders pulled within 22-21. The Lady Bears would score the final three points for the 25-21 win.
 
The third set was back-and-forth with 11 ties and 13 lead changes. After a kill by Madi Busler of NJIT tied the score at 23, Morgan State came out of the timeout and closed out the set and match with McBride recording the final two points on kills for the 25-23 victory.
 
The Lady Bears close out the tournament this afternoon against Quinnipiac at 3 p.m. The Bobcats (3-2) have also won their first two matches in the tournament.
