Lady Bears Top Norfolk State, 4-2; Remain Unbeaten In MEAC Play

Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (April 7, 2019)-The Morgan State women's tennis team stayed undefeated at home this weekend when they topped Norfolk State, 4-2 on Sunday in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match at the MSU Tennis Courts.

The Lady Bears (6-11, 4-0 MEAC) would take an early lead by taking the doubles point. At No. 3 position Oriane Yehouenou and Dana Santiago would win 6-3. Asmara Rose and Peggy Rooke would win 7-6 after a hard battle against Naz Karagoz and Zoe Fraser at the No. 1 spot.

Rose would be forced to retire in singles at No. 2 after getting injured early in the match. At the No. 1 spot Naz Karagoz would win in straight sets against Santiago and give the 2-1 lead to the Spartans.

The Lady Bears would react by winning in straight sets in the next three matches to win the match. Yehouenou, who was playing in her final home match as a Lady Bear, would start by sweeping Joyce Field 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. Fellow senior Rooke would follow and win 7-6, 7-5 in a tough match at the No. 2 position. Jourdan Wallace would then clinch for the Lady Bears with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot.

"It was very special and emotional. It was an amazing feeling to get the win in my last match at the MSU Courts," said senior Peggy Rooke. "The dramatic win reminded me of when we won conference tournament last year, which is definitely the most memorable moment of my time at MSU and in my tennis career overall. I'm really going to miss my teammates and the feeling of playing on these courts alongside them. We've accomplished so much together and I'm never going to forget it."

With this win the Lady Bears are still undefeated in MEAC play and moved into first-place in the MEAC Northern Division. Norfolk State (5-8, 4-1 MEAC) wrapped up its MEAC schedule suffering its lone loss in conference play.

Morgan State will try to secure the division title outright when it plays at Coppin State in their last match of the regular season on Monday, April 15 at 2 p.m.

"I am so happy to conclude my home career with a sweep; I played very hard and it paid off," said senior Oriane Yehouenou. "This weekend was very emotional to me because it's the end of an era, but I know the future has great things for me to see. Obviously winning the MEAC tournament is one of my most memorable moments and experiencing the NCAA Tournament is something that I won't forget. I will miss my teammates, training hard, and competing every week."

The Lady Bears will be back on the court on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to the University of Delaware for a non-conference match. First serve at 5 p.m.
