Men's Tennis Tops Norfolk State 4-1

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 7, 2019) -- Morgan State men's tennis remains undefeated in MEAC Northern Division play, following a 4-1 win against Norfolk State on Sunday at the MSU Tennis Courts.

The Bears improved 10-6 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Spartans (5-7, 2-1 MEAC) missed their chance to complete a conference season with an unblemished record for the first time since 1997.

"It was another big day for Morgan Tennis," said MSU coach Matthew Townes. "We played strong and intense throughout the day and won a tough battle."

A pair of 6-4 wins gave the doubles points to the Bears. Morgan State's combination of Nihit Rawal and Oguzhan Ceylan continued to roll, notching a win versus Andres Alcaraz and Dan Dumitrascu on the third court. Rawal and Ceylan are 6-1 on the season as one of the top duos in the conference.  On court two, Arjun Ramakrishnan and Serhii Kharchez knocked-off Da Silva and Ignacia Guevel to secure the point for the Bears and an 8-3 record for the pair.

The Bears captured three of four matches in singles play.

Da Silva took the first set of his top-seeded flight against Ramakrishnan, 6-2, before Ramakrishnan was forced to retire prior to the start of the second set.

MSU regained the lead on the third court, where Rawal downed Augustin Carrizo, 6-4, 6-2, notching his fifth win in a row. Ceylan, one of the top singles players in the league, claimed a 6-4, 6-4 win against Fernandez on court four.

Lopez provided the clinching point on court five as he won both of his sets against Dumitrascu by the same 6-1 margin.

With Sunday's win, the Bears locked up first place in the Northern Division standings and take a brief hiatus from MEAC play to travel to Washington D.C. to face Georgetown on Saturday, April 13. First serve is set for 9 a.m.
