Lady Bears Split Doubleheader With Cornell

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 2, 2019)-The Lady Bears' softball team earned a non-conference doubleheader split on Tuesday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field against visiting Cornell. The Big Red would win the opener, 9-5 and Morgan State claimed the second game, 10-4.

The series marked the first time the two programs have met since a 3-2 victory by Cornell on March 25, 2017 in the opener of the Mount St. Mary's Tournament.

In Game 2, Damali Young fell a double shy of hitting for the cycle, as the Lady Bears bounced back to defeat the Big Red, 10-4. Young would go 3-for-3 with a game-high four runs, a walk and RBI. The senior outfielder's hits would include a single, triple and a homerun.

Morgan State would record 12 hits, scoring 10 times and had 10 RBI. Giselle Alvarez was 2-for-4 with a game-high 3 RBI and two runs scored, while Haylee Bobos recorded two hits and had 2 RBI. Amy Pacheco finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and Damishah Charles drove in two runs on a hit and scored a run.

Morgan State struck first with two runs in the first inning, but the Big Red countered with four runs in the second inning, capped off by a bases loaded double hit by Hanna Crist which drove in three runs and put the guest ahead 4-2.

That would be all of the offense for the Big Red, as Morgan State would score eight consecutive runs to put Cornell away.

The Lady Bears returned the favor scoring four runs of their own in the bottom half of the second to reclaim the lead at 6-4. Morgan State's run began when Meikel Turner singled up the middle to score Sarah Heagy. Alvarez, who doubled to drive in two more runs, later scored when Charles grounded out to second base.

Damali Young led off the fourth inning with a solo homerun to make the score 7-4.  Morgan State then got back-to-back RBI hits from Bobos and Pacheco, which scored Alvarez and Jalian Young, respectively, extending the Lady Bears' lead to 9-4.

Morgan State ended its scoring for the day, when Charles doubled in the sixth inning to score Damali Young for the 10th and final run.

Stephanie Rundlett, who picked up her sixth win of the season, pitched a complete game, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks, while throwing a game-high three strikeouts.

Ashley Delany was charged with the loss and fell to 2-6 on the season. Delany surrendered nine runs on 11 hits and struck out one batter in four innings of work.

Offensively Cornell was led offensively by Crist, who went 2-for-3 at the plate with 3 RBI. Lawson was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a walk.

Morgan State will now make the short trip to crosstown rival Towson for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 3. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Tiger Softball Stadium.
