BALTIMORE, Md. (April 23, 2019)-Morgan State senior Peggy Rooke and sophomore Asmara Rose were named to the 2019 All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Women's Tennis Second Team, as announced by the league office on Tuesday in Norfolk, Va.
Naz Karagoz of Norfolk State was named MEAC Player of the Year, while Michelle Ncube of Bethune-Cookman was named the MEAC Rookie of the Year. Hardeep Judge of South Carolina State was named MEAC Coach of the Year.
This is the second consecutive year Morgan State has had at least one Lady Bear player named to the All-MEAC team. Last season then senior Danielle Thompson, earned both MEAC Player of the Year and All-MEAC first team accolades. Thompson would become the first Lady Bear to receive first-team honors since 2013, when then junior Ekaterina Iakovleva and freshman Mi'Kola Cooper were both named as All-MEAC first team selections.
Rooke ended this season third on the team in singles victories with seven. The Malmo, Sweden native finished 7-3 in her last 10 matches, including five straight wins to conclude the season. She finished 4-1 while playing at No. 2 singles and was a perfect 5-0 in MEAC play.
Rose led the Lady Bears in singles victories with 10. She spent time playing at the No. 2-No. 4 positions and recorded a season-best five wins, while playing at the No. 3 spot. A native of Baltimore, Rose would finish 3-1 in MEAC action. Â
Rooke, who was named MEAC Player of the Week (4/10) and Rose, who earlier in the season earned MEAC Player of the Week honors (2/14), spent the entire season playing alongside each other as doubles partners. The two finished with an 11-6 overall record, including 9-4 when playing at the No. 1 spot. They also went undefeated at 4-0 in MEAC doubles competition. The duo would finish the season going 7-3 in their last 10 contests and ended on a four-match winning streak.
Joining Rooke and Rose on the All-MEAC second team are Rehaana Butt (Bethune-Cookman), Fabiana Ramirez (North Carolina A&T), Maru Berghaus (N.C. Central) and Divya Murali (South Carolina State).Â
First-team All-MEAC honors went to Michelle Ncube (Bethune-Cookman), Rachel Harden (Florida A&M), Haleigh Porter (Florida A&M), Naz Karagoz (Norfolk State), Frida Cnossen (North Carolina Central) and Zainab Bendahhou (South Carolina State).
