Jaspers Sweep Morgan State In Non-Conference Action

RIVERDALE, N.Y. (March 31, 2019)-The Morgan State softball team dropped its non-conference doubleheader on the road to Manhattan on Sunday afternoon at Gaelic Park by the scores of 10-5 and 2-1.

The Lady Bears fell to 8-20 on the season, while the Jaspers improved to 11-15 with the sweep and remained unbeaten against Morgan State in the series' three meetings.

Morgan State would score five runs on nine hits and had 5 RBI in the opener, while the host Jaspers scored 10 runs on 10 hits and had 10 RBI along with drawing seven walks.

The guests got on the board first in the first inning when Amy Pacheco's single scored Damali Young for the 1-0 lead.

Manhattan responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when Lauren Pitney homered. The Jaspers extended their lead to 4-1 in the second inning when Pitney reached on a Morgan State error, which allowed two Manhattan runs to cross.

Pacheco picked up her second RBI of the game, when she reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Giselle Alvarez to score and cut the Manhattan deficit to 4-2.

Manhattan would score three runs in the third and added another two runs in the fifth inning to increase its advantage to 9-3.

Haylee Bobos would homer in the sixth inning, but the Jaspers' Christine Gebhardt got the run back with her homer in the bottom of the inning.

Alvarez would not be outdone, as she homered in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-4 contest. Pacheco later singled to left field to score Charles for the final run of the game.

Morgan State was led by Pacheco, who finished with a team-high 3 RBI after going 2-fof-3 at the plate. Bobos finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI and Young was 2-for-3 with a run and a walk. Alvarez finished 1-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk.

Pitney led the hosts with two hits, a run and a game-high 6 RBI. Gebhardt finished 3-for-4 with a game-high four runs scored for the Jaspers.

In Game 2, all the scoring would come in the sixth inning. Damishah Charles broke a scoreless game when she singled to center field to score Giselle Alvarez and give the guests a 1-0 lead.

The Jaspers would waste little time, doing their damage in the bottom half of the sixth inning with two runs. Megan Gillooley would draw a bases loaded walk, scoring Lauren Pitney for the tying run. Alonso then flied out to right field to score Adriana Gambino, which would prove to be the game winner.

Gambino led Manhattan with two hits on three at bats and a run scored. Jessie Rising picked up the win and improved to 4-5 on the season. Rising surrendered a run on four hits, allowed three walks and threw three strikeouts.

Morgan State's Stephanie Rundlett was charged with the loss and threw a game-high five strikeouts. Sarah Heagy led the Lady Bears with a 2-for-2 outing at the plate, while Charles went 2-for-3 with a RBI.

The Lady Bears will look to end their three-game losing skid when they return home to host the Cornell Big Red in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 2. First pitch is at 2 p.m. at Lois T. Murray Field.
