Colonials Shut Down Morgan State In Finale, 8-1

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 27, 2019)-Morgan Kummer had a game-high three hits and scored twice and had 2 RBI, as George Washington defeated Morgan State, 8-1 in the doubleheader finale on Wednesday afternoon at the GW Softball Field.
 
Jenna Cone, Sierra Lange and Hannah Eslick all went 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored for the Colonials, who recorded 12 hits and produced eight RBI in the game. Eslick and Jessica Linquist each totaled 2 RBI in the game.
 
Linquist broke a 1-1 tie when she singled to center field to score two runs and give the Colonials a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the fourth inning. The Colonials would up their lead to 4-1 when Eslick singled to left field to score Elena Shelepak in the fifth inning.
 
George Washington (23-10) would go back to work in the sixth inning, scoring four runs to put the game out of reach. Kummer doubled to left field to score Olivia Ortlieb and Lange to put the hosts in front 6-1. Eslick and Riley Tejcek each recorded RBI singles to up the Colonials lead to 8-1.
 
Morgan State (8-18) was held to a run on five hits. Giselle Alvarez led Morgan State with two hits on three at bats and recorded an RBI in the third inning with a single to left field to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead. Pinch hitters Stormy Zyzyk finished 1-for-1 and Sarah Heagy was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Damali Young collected Morgan State's other hit, giving her 160 hits for her career.
 
Kaitlin Buff earned the win and improved to 4-2 on the season, while Jayme Cone picked up her first save of the season. Stephanie Rundlett (5-12) struck out a game-high three batters in 5.2 innings of work.
 
The Lady Bears will return to the field on Sunday, March 31 with a non-conference doubleheader at Manhattan. First pitch is at 1 p.m. from Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.
