Softball Defeats George Washington In Opener, 5-4

WASHINGTON, D.C. (March 27, 2019)-Morgan State junior catcher Haylee Bobos broke a 2-2 score by hitting a three-run homer in the fifth inning to help lift the visiting Lady Bears to a 5-4 non-conference victory over George Washington in the first game of a doubleheader at the GW Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since Feb. 22, 2015, when George Washington defeated Morgan State in the finale of the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.

With the win, Morgan State picked up its second consecutive victory and improved to 8-17 on the season, while the Colonials fell to 22-10.

Morgan State got on the board first when sophomore Damishah Charles homered to left field, scoring senior Damali Young to give the guests a two-run lead in the third inning.

GW bounced back with a run in the bottom of the third when Jessica Linquist singled to center field to score Riley Tejcek. The Colonials would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on Alessandra Ponce's solo home run to center field to even the score at two runs apiece.

With two outs in the top of the fifth inning, Bobos delivered with her three-run homer to left center to put the Lady Bears ahead, 5-2.

The lead would stay that way until the seventh, when GW got a two-out, two-run double hit to left center by Jenna Cone to cut the Morgan State lead to 5-4. Lady Bears' pitcher Mikayla Barnard would end the game by getting Sierra Lange to ground out at short for the final play.

The Lady Bears would finish the game scoring five runs on seven hits, while GW scored four runs on 11 hits. Charles led Morgan State with her 3-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored and 2 RBI. Bobos was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a game-high 3 RBI.

George Washington was led by Linquist and Lange, who both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Cone recorded a hit and had a team-high 2 RBI.

Barnard pitched a complete game for Morgan State, throwing 98 pitches and three strikeouts in seven innings to improve to 3-4 on the season. Lange, who fell to 13-8 on the season, collected a game-high eight strikeouts.
