Bears Extend Winning Streak to Five

DURHAM, N.C. (March 17, 2019) --  Sebastian Lopez and Shrey Gupta won their doubles match and each of their singles matches to lead Morgan State to 5-2 victory at North Carolina Central on Monday.

The Bears improved to 6-4 on the season and picked up their fifth straight win.

Lopez and Gupta accounted for three of the Bears five points on the day and won their first match as a duo at the No. 2 position this season.

Lopez won his singles match at the No. 5 position, defeating the Eagles Sebastian Bromley, 6-2, 6-1. He has won his last three matches.

Gupta defeated Pablo Juez Torres at the No. 6 spot, 7-5, 6-3.

NC Central (1-8) was playing a fellow MEAC member institution for the first time this season, but the match did not count in the league standings being the Eagles are in the Southern Division.

Morgan State took an early 1-0 lead when it won the doubles point. Along with Lopez and Gupta's victory, Serhii Kharchev and Arjun Ramakrishnan won their match at the No. 1 position, 6-3.

The Bears had its lead cut, however, when Gabriel Cucalon leveled the match with his straight set win over Kharchev in the top tier singles match by a 6-1, 6-4 margin.

At number two singles, Ramakrishnan lost a 6-3, 6-4 decision to Amit Baran.

Morgan State's Nihit Rawal was able to knot the score for a second time with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3.  Sebastian Lopez followed 6-2, 6-1 to put the Bears ahead for good at No. 5, while Shrey Gupta clinched the match for the Bears at No. 6 with a 7-5, 6-3 victory. Oguzhan Ceylan capped the day by outlasting Thanos Spyropoulos by a slim 6-7, 7-5, 7-5 margin.

The Bears will look to extend its five-match winning streak Tuesday when it travels to North Carolina A&T at 4 p.m.
