Bear Shots

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 25, 2019)-Imani Bryant scored a team-high 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting, to lead four Lady Bison in double figures scoring, as visiting Howard defeated Morgan State, 74-62 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) contest at Hill Field House on Monday evening.

Howard improved to 16-11 overall and 9-5 in the MEAC with the win, while Morgan State dropped to 8-19, 6-7 MEAC.

Bryant would also add a game-high eight rebounds and a team-high four steals on the evening. Jayla Thornton scored 15 points, while Ayonna Williams had 14 points to go with her team-high five assists. Asia McCants came off the bench to finish with 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting.

Howard would shot 48 percent (25-of-52) from the floor and hit 19-of-25 (76 percent) from the charity stripe. The Lady Bears took 61 shots and connected on 22 for 36 percent for the game. After going 0-for-9 from three-point range in Saturday's loss to Norfolk State, Morgan State would go 6-for-19 (31.6 percent) on Monday.

For the third consecutive game, the Lady Bears would start off slow and fall behind. Morgan State would take a 1-0 lead before the opening tip, after converting one of two free throws to start the game after Howard was called for an administrative technical foul. That would be the only lead of the game for the hosts, as Howard would use a 14-2 spurt to take control of the game and take a 14-3 lead with 2:08 left in the first quarter.

Morgan State would regroup and go on an 8-2 run to begin the second quarter and cut the Howard lead to four points at 19-15, following a three-pointer by Jihayah Chavis with 6:10 left in the period. The Lady Bison would respond with a 16-6 run to take a 35-21 advantage into the locker room.

Trailing 57-46 with 8:34 left in the contest, the Lady Bears would make one more run at Howard, pulling within three points at 59-56 after a three-pointer by Chavis with 5:53 to play.

However, the guests would go on a 13-0 run to take their largest lead of the day at 72-56 with 2:44 remaining to all but seal the deal.

Adre'onia Coleman scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for Morgan State, which suffered its third straight loss to their Beltway rivals. Chavis scored 17 points and recorded a game-high five steals, while Ashia McCalla came off the bench to add 11 points.

Morgan State will be back in action on Saturday, March 2, when it travels to Dover, Del. to take on the Delaware State Hornets in a MEAC contest at 2 p.m. at Memorial Hall.

Delaware State (5-19, 3-10 MEAC) was dealt an 85-59 loss at Coppin State on Monday.
