BETHPAGE, N.Y. (Feb. 9, 2019)-The Morgan State women's tennis team fell to Hofstra (2-1), 5-2 in a non-conference match on Saturday.
Morgan State (1-6) started by losing the double point. Despite the win from the freshman duo of
Averiana Mitchell and
Jourdan Wallace at the No. 3 position, the Lady Bears lost the two other doubles matches.
Sophomore
Asmara Rose started off well for the Lady Bears winning her singles match in straight sets at No. 3 and evened the score at 1-1. Katherine Kachakov got the win at No. 2 6-2, 6-2 over
Dana Santiago. Alejsandra Ruffin followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over
Peggy Rooke giving a 3-1 lead to Hofstra.
Wallace was able to reduce the lead to 3-2 getting her first singles win of the season, dropping only two games at the No. 6 position. Sarah-Catherine Herndon clinched the win for Hofstra with a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Mitchell at No. 4. Senior
Oriane Yehouenou pushed her opponent to a third and decisive set, but fell short at No. 5.
"We had a really tough loss. The match was winnable for us, especially the doubles point," said Morgan State head coach Matt Townes. "We have to get better singles play from our upperclassmen if we are to be successful when we get into conference play."
The Lady Bears will travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. on Sunday to face St. Francis Brooklyn. Matchpoint Mill Basin.
