Morgan State Falls At Hofstra, 51-39

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (Dec. 4, 2019)-Marianne Kalin scored a game-high 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, Ineza Sorelle added 11 and Jaylen Hines finished with 10, as host Hofstra ended a five-game losing skid with a 51-39 non-conference victory over Morgan State on Wednesday night at the Davis S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.

Kalin and Hines each fell a rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with a game-high nine rebounds apiece to help the Pride outrebound Morgan State, 35-26 for the game.

The win was the first for Hofstra (2-6) over Morgan State in the series' three meetings.

Morgan State (3-6) which dropped its third straight, was led by Chelsea Mitchell, who finished with a team-high 16 points and pulled down a team-best six rebounds. Jihayah Chavis added six points and along with Mitchell, recorded a game-high four steals. Chavis now has 175 career steals and moved passed Lisa Mickens (174 from 1997-01) for seventh-place at Morgan State.

The 39 points are a season-low for Morgan State, whose previous low of 48 points came in its last outing at Michigan (12/1) and in the season opener at Marquette (11/5).

Morgan State entered the contest averaging 68.2 points per game, while holding its opponents to 64.2 points per outing. Dahnye Redd, who was averaging a team-high 16.3 points, went down with an injury four minutes into the game and did not return.

With the loss of Redd, Mitchell would end up playing the entire game. She tried to pick up the slack, scoring eight of her 16 points in the third quarter, as Morgan State opened the quarter on an 11-5 run. Mitchell's eighth and final point of the period came on a jumper in the lane to bring the guests within 28-27 with 3:34 left.

Dezyree Morales knocked down the first of two free throw attempts at the 1:54 mark to even the score at 30-30, as the Lady Bears erased an eight-point deficit (28-20) just under five minutes. But, Kalin would score on a layup and added the free throw to give Hofstra a 33-30 lead heading into the fourth period.

Morgan State would not recover, as Hofstra went on a 13-4 spurt, capped off by a three-pointer by Ineza to give the Pride a 46-34 advantage with 2:06 left in the contest.

The Lady Bears return to the floor on Sunday, Dec. 15, when they visit crosstown foe the University of Maryland Baltimore County for a non-conference game at 11 a.m. at the UMBC Event Center in Baltimore, Md.
