Lady Bears Let One Get Away At UMBC; Fall In Overtime, 65-63

BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 15, 2019)-Te'yjah Oliver, who knocked down back-to-back jumpers to force overtime, hit two free throws with 13 seconds remaining in the extra session to give the host Retrievers a 64-63 lead and O'lesheya Braxton added another free throw, as the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) held off crosstown foe Morgan State, 65-63 on Sunday afternoon at the UMBC Event Center.

The Retrievers ended a six-game losing skid with the win and improved to 3-7 on the year, while Morgan State dropped its third straight and fell to 3-7.

Oliver finished the game shooting 9-of-18 from the floor and 11-of-12 from the charity stripe to score a game-high 31 points. Janee'a Summers and Braxton each added 11 points and Jen Gast hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds as UMBC earned its second straight win over Morgan State to improve to 15-12 in the all-time series.

Morgan State was led by Chelsea Mitchell, who scored 23 points on 11-of-23 shooting and recorded a game-high 11 rebounds to earn a double-double. Ashia McCalla added 20 points and Jihayah Chavis chipped in with 12 points.

The guests, who led 27-23 at the intermission, began the third quarter using a 15-5 run, capped off by a layup from Mitchell to give Morgan State its largest lead of the contest at 42-30 with 3:43 remaining in the period.

The Retrievers regrouped and closed out the third on a 9-2 spurt to pull within 44-39 on a three-pointer by Oliver.

Morgan State upped its lead to 10 points (51-41) when McCalla knocked down three straight free throws to give the Lady Bears the lead with 6:15 to play in the game and a layup by Dezyree Morales put the Lady Bears ahead 55-48 with three minutes left in regulation.

But the host Retrievers held Morgan State scoreless the rest of the way, while scoring the next seven points to force overtime. The Lady Bears, who committed 17 turnovers in the game, had five during the final three minutes, which allowed UMBC to get back in the game.

Oliver, who hit a jumper with 41 seconds left to cut the deficit to 55-53, then recorded a steal with 14 seconds remaining and drained another jumper before the horn sounded to even the score at 55 all and force overtime.

UMBC shot a whopping 31 free throws for the game, connecting on 23 for 74 percent. The Lady Bears shot 75 percent from the free throw line, but only had eight attempts, converting six.

The Lady Bears forced 28 UMBC turnovers, 15 of which came by way of steals. Mitchell tallied a game-high six thefts, while McCalla and Chavis notched four and three steals, respectively.
