BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 19, 2019)-The Morgan State women's basketball team will close out 2019, as well as their non-conference slate this weekend in San Juan, Puerto Rico as they take part in the Puerto Rico Clasico (Dec. 20-21) at Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez. The Lady Bears open up play on Friday, Dec. 20 against Stony Brook scheduled for 2:30 p.m. (1:30 p.m. ET). This will be the fourth consecutive season the Lady Bears will take part in the tournament and the third trip to Puerto Rico. The 2017 tournament was moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. due to the damage of Hurricane Maria. Fans can watch the game live on www.Flohoops.com (subscription).
 
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (4-7) ended its season-long four-game losing skid with a 72-62 victory at home over Texas State (12/18). Chelsea Mitchell and Jihayah Chavis each scored a game-high 16 points to lead five Lady Bears in double figures scoring in the win. Mitchell fell shy of a double-double, as she hauled in a game-high nine rebounds. Chavis shot 6-of-9 from the floor, including 3-of-5 from three-point range and dished out a team-best six assists. Ashia McCalla scored 14 points on 4-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc, while Ja'Niah Henson came off the bench to score 11 points on 3-of-5 shooting from three-point range and Dahnye Redd, who was making her first appearance after suffering an injury two games ago, came off the bench to add 10 points. Redd leads the Lady Bears in scoring at 14 points per outing and is grabbing 6.5 rebounds per game. Mitchell is averaging 13.5 points and a team-best 8.4 rebounds per game, while McCalla is scoring 12.1 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. As a team, Morgan State enters the game averaging 65.5 points per contest, while surrendering 63.0 points to its opponents.
 
MSU VS. STONY BROOK SERIES NOTES: This will be the eighth meeting between the two programs with Stony Brook holding a commanding 6-1 record. The Seawolves have won three straight, including the last meeting, a 46-42 win at home (12/14/15). Morgan State's lone win against Stony Brook was a 66-63 overtime victory in Baltimore (11/18/12).
 
A LOOK AT THE SEAWOLVES: Stony Brook (9-1) is riding a six-game winning streak. The Seawolves picked up a road win at Wagner, 66-45 on Dec. 15. Kaela Hilaire scored a game-high 23 points and dished out a game-high seven assists. India Pagan, who is a member of the Puerto Rico women's national team, scored 13 points, while Jonae Cox came off the bench to finish with 10. Hilaire leads the team in scoring (14.3), assists (64) and steals (23). Pagan is scoring 10.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game. Cheyenne Clark leads the Seawolves in rebounding with 7.8 per game. Stony Brook is averaging 66.8 points per game and allowing 54.2 by its opponents.
 
MITCHELL NAMED MEAC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chelsea Mitchell was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Mitchell shares the honor with Howard's Sarah Edmond. It is the third MEAC weekly honor this season for Mitchell. The 5-foot-9 guard dropped a team-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards in the overtime loss at UMBC (12/15) to earn her MEAC leading fourth double-double this season.
 
CHAVIS MOVES INTO SEVENTH ON STEALS CHART: Senior Jihayah Chavis had four steals at Hofstra (12/4) to move a steal past former Lady Bear Lisa Mickens (174 from 1997-01) for seventh all-time at Morgan State with 175. Chavis, who added two more steals against Texas State (12/18), currently has 180 steals for her career, is now 21 steals away from passing Whitney Johnson (201 from 2003-07) for sixth.
 
MITCHELL MOVES UP STEALS CHART: Chelsea Mitchell recorded a game-high five steals in the win over Texas State (12/18) to give her 124 steals for her career. That ties her for 14th all-time at Morgan State with the late Tracey Carrington who collected 124 steals from 2011-15.
 
IT'S HARD OUT THERE ON THE ROAD: Morgan State wrapped up its season-long seven-game stretch away from home with a tough 65-63 overtime loss at UMBC (12/15). The Lady Bears, who are  1-7 on the road thus far this season, went 1-6 during the seven-game road swing.
 
WELCOME HOME: The Lady Bears finally played in front of a Hill Field House crowd when they welcomed Texas State on Wednesday, Dec. 18. It was just the third home game this season for Morgan State and the first since defeating Washington Adventist (11/11) 37 days ago.
 
DAVIS RECORDS CAREER VICTORY NO. 380: MSU head coach Ed Davis Jr. picked up his 380th career coaching victory, following the Lady Bears' win over Washington Adventist (11/11). Davis, who is in his eighth season with the Lady Bears and fourth as head coach, has an overall record of 382-308. He recorded career win No. 370, following the Lady Bears' win over UMass Lowell (12/29/18). Davis has guided his teams to a total of four NCAA Tournament appearances, while at Bowie State (3) and Delaware State (1) and two Division II Sweet 16 appearances.
 
I WILL FOLLOW HIM: The Lady Bears' Jan. 4, 2020 MEAC contest at Delaware State will be played at 4 p.m. instead of the original 2 p.m. slate. Morgan State's men's team will instead battle the Hornets at 2 p.m. It will mark the first time in nearly three decades that the women's team will follow the men's game in a MEAC doubleheader.
 
MORGAN STATE 'GRIT': The Morgan State athletic department has adopted the slogan GRIT for the 2019-20 athletic campaign. GRIT, which stands for Growth, Resiliency, Integrity and Teamwork, was introduced by Morgan State Director of Athletics Dr. Edward Scott at the start of the Fall semester. GRIT will define all 15 of Morgan State's athletic teams on and off the field of play this season.
 
HOME SWEET HOME: Senior guard Chelsea Mitchell will end her collegiate career at Morgan State where she started. A native of Columbia, Md., Mitchell spent her first two years playing at Morgan from 2015-17, before transferring to Lander University for her junior season (2017-18).
