ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Dec. 1, 2019)-Akienreh Jonson shot 6-for-6 from the field to score 16 points and Michelle Sidor came off the bench to add 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-5 from three-point range to lead host Michigan to an 80-48 victory over Morgan State on Sunday afternoon at Crisler Center.
Naz Hillmon also knocked down six field goals, going 6-for-9 to finish with 15 points, as the Wolverines improved to 6-1 on the season and 2-0 all-time againstt Morgan State.
The Lady Bears (3-5) used a mini 6-0 run to build their largest lead of the game at four points (13-9) on a jumper by Chelsea Mitchell with 3:47 remaining in the opening period. Morgan State maintained a four-point advantage when Dahnye Redd hit a jumper in the lane to make it a 15-11 contest with 2:20 left in the first quarter. Michigan however, closed out the period scoring the final four points to even the score at 15 all.
Morgan State pulled within a point at 23-22 when Ashia McCalla knocked down a trey with 3:55 remaining in the second quarter. The Wolverines would score the next eight points to close out the period on a 9-2 spurt to take a 32-24 advantage at the intermission.Â
It was all Michigan from that point on. The Wolverines ended the contest by holding the Lady Bears to just eight points in the fourth quarter, while scoring 22 points. Michelle Sidor hit a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining in the game to give the hosts their largest lead of the evening at 32 points (80-48).
The Lady Bears were led by Redd, who finished with 16 points and six rebounds, both team highs. Mitchell added 10 points and five rebounds.
Morgan State returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 4 when it visits Hofstra at 7 p.m. at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex in Hempstead, N.Y. The Pride (1-5) are coming off an 85-46 loss at Long Island Brooklyn on Saturday, Nov. 30. Â
The Lady Bears lead the all-time series, 2-0. The teams last met during the 1980-81 season with Morgan State earning a 58-50 victory.
