Texas State
BALTIMORE, Md. (Dec. 18, 2019)-After playing seven consecutive games on the road, the Morgan State women's basketball team finally returns home as it plays host to Texas State in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Hill Field House. The contest will be the first meeting between the two programs. It will also be the last home game of 2019. MSU VS. TEXAS STATE SERIES NOTES: This will be the first meeting.
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (3-7) is in the midst of a season-long four-game losing skid, following its 63-65 overtime loss on the road at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (12/15).
Chelsea Mitchell scored a team-high 23 points and added a game-high 11 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.
Ashia McCalla added 20 points and
Jihayah Chavis chipped in with 12 points. Mitchell has paced the Lady Bears with 13.3 points and a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game. McCalla is contributing 11.9 points. As a team, Morgan State enters the game averaging 64.8 points per contest, while surrendering 63.0 points to its opponents.
A LOOK AT THE BOBCATS: Texas State (6-2) enters the contest riding a four-game winning streak. The Bobcats defeated Dartmouth, 61-51 on Sunday. Da'Nasia Hood scored a game-high 15 points, while Brooke Holle, who was named Sun Belt Player of the Week (Dec. 16), finished with 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds. Taylor Kennedy added 10 points in the win for the Bobcats, who improved to 1-2 on the road this season. Texas State is averaging 62.9 points per outing and is allowing 53 points per game from its opponents.
NEXT UP: The Lady Bears will head to Puerto Rico to face Stony Brook (12/20) and Akron (12/21) in the Puerto Rico Clasico. It will mark the fourth consecutive season Morgan State has taken part in the tournament and the third trip to Puerto Rico. The 2017 tournament was moved to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. due to the damage of Hurricane Maria.
MITCHELL NAMED MEAC CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chelsea Mitchell was named MEAC Co-Player of the Week by the league office on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Mitchell shares the honor with Howard's Sarah Edmond. It is the third MEAC weekly honor this season for Mitchell. The 5-foot-9 guard dropped a team-high 23 points and grabbed a game-high 11 boards in the overtime loss at UMBC (12/15) to earn her MEAC leading fourth double-double this season.
CHAVIS MOVES INTO SEVENTH ON STEALS CHART: Senior
Jihayah Chavis had four steals at Hofstra (12/4) to move a steal past former Lady Bear Lisa Mickens (174 from 1997-01) for seventh all-time at Morgan State with 175. Chavis, who added three more steals at UMBC (12/15), currently has 178 steals for her career, is now 23 steals away from passing Whitney Johnson (201 from 2003-07) for sixth.
IT'S HARD OUT THERE ON THE ROAD: Morgan State wrapped up its season-long seven-game stretch away from home with a tough 65-63 overtime loss at UMBC (12/15). The Lady Bears, who are 1-7 on the road thus far this season, went 1-6 during the seven-game road swing.
11-DAY LAYOFF: The Lady Bears ended an 11-day layoff when they took the floor against UMBC (12/15). It was Morgan State's first game since dropping a 51-39 decision at Hofstra (12/4). The layoff was so that Morgan State could focus on final exams.
WELCOME HOME: The Lady Bears will finally play in front of a Hill Field House crowd when they welcome Texas State on Wednesday, Dec. 18. It will be just the third home game this season for Morgan State and the first since defeating Washington Adventist (11/11) 37 days ago.
