BALTIMORE, Md. (Nov. 6, 2019)-The Morgan State volleyball team will take its season-long six-match winning streak with them when they make the short trip across town to rival Coppin State for a crucial Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match on Friday, Nov. 8. First serve is at 7 p.m. at the Physical Education Complex on the Coppin State campus.
Morgan State (14-11, 8-4 MEAC) currently sits in second-place in the MEAC Northern Division standings, while Coppin State (11-15, 7-5 MEAC) is in third.
Friday's contest will mark the 77th meeting between the two teams. The Lady Bears and Coppin State last met on Oct. 29 at Hill Field House with Morgan State winning, 3-1 to improve to 64-12 all-time against the Eagles.
Morgan State is coming off a 3-0 sweep of Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon for Senior Day, sending seniors Jasmin Hubbard and Roi Wallace out with one final home victory at Hill Field House.
With the win, Morgan State closed out its home schedule going 9-3 this season, including a perfect 4-0 on its final homestand. The nine home victories are the most since the 2006 season, when that team finished 9-0 at home. Â
Playing at home for the final time of her career, Wallace totaled a match-high 39 assists, seven digs and hit .500 with a kill in the win. She also set a career- and match-high seven service aces, surpassing her previous high of six she recorded earlier this season at Portland State (9/13). Hubbard finished with three digs and tied a season-high two assists in her last time at home.
Junior Tylar Roberson hit .385 with 11 kills and 10 digs to collect her 10th double-double of the season, as Morgan State avenged its loss to Norfolk State earlier in the season. Zoe McBride recorded a match-high 20 kills, while hitting .325 and adding 13 digs to record her 15th double-double. Jennevy Santos finished with a match-high 20 digs. Â
Morgan State served up 10 aces for the match, while the Spartans had two aces and six serving errors. The visiting Spartans held a 4.0-2.0 advantage in blocks. McBride led Morgan State with two.Â
Coppin State (11-15, 7-5 MEAC) was dealt a tough 3-2 loss at home to division leader Howard on Sunday. The Lady Bears defeated Howard just two days earlier by way of a sweep to hand the four-time defending champs its lone MEAC loss of the season.Â
Paola Caten posted a double-double with a match-high 20 kills and 10 digs, while Miajavon Coleman also had a double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs in the loss to Howard. Brianna Lang tallied a match-best 54 assists and Ashley Roman finished with a match-high 25 digs. Â
Christa Johnson finished with a match-high six blocks, while Salma Gonzales and Jordan Celestine each added five, as the Eagles held a 12.5-8.0 advantage over Howard. The Eagles however committed 21 service errors.
