Women’s Basketball Comes Up Short At Saint Peter’s, 78-77

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Nov. 26, 2019)-Dahnye Redd scored a game-high 26 points to lead three Lady Bear starters in double figures scoring but it wasn't enough, as Morgan State dropped a non-conference game at Saint Peter's, 78-77 on Tuesday evening at Yanitelli Center.

The loss was Morgan State's 11th out of 12 meetings against Saint Peter's. Chelsea Mitchell finished with a double-double, scoring 17 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds. Ashia McCalla tallied 12 points.

Morgan State (3-4) trailed 78-77 with 3.3 seconds remaining in the game when Sydney Searcy got her hands on the inbound pass. While it appeared as if everyone on the floor had stopped playing, Chelsea Mitchell, who earlier in the day was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week, picked up the loose ball and raced past the Morgan State bench and scored on a potential game-winning layup.

However, after the officials went to the monitor to review the play, the game clock had expired and the red light around the basket was clearly lit before Mitchell had released the ball, thus giving the host Peacocks the victory in their home opener.

The Lady Bears held their largest lead of the game at 11 points (28-17) when Redd hit a free throw to convert a three-point play with 8:24 remaining in the second quarter. The lead would dwindle to two points when Saint Peter's Yamel Abreu hit a three-pointer with 2:34 left in the quarter to make it a 36-34 game. Morgan State would take a 40-37 lead into the locker room at the break.

Morgan State hung onto a one-point advantage after Redd knocked down two free throws with 3:21 remaining in the contest to give the guests a 67-66 lead.

Saint Peter's (3-2) would respond with an 8-0 run over the next minute, 19 seconds to pull in front 74-67. The Lady Bears would close using a 10-4 spurt, capped off by two free throw by Redd with 3.3 remaining to set up Mitchell's near steal and layup to end the game.

Saint Peter's was led by Kendrea Williams, who scored 17 points and had three blocks. Harris recorded a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Briyanah Richardson came off the bench to score 12 points. Taiah Thornton tallied 10 points before fouling out.

The Lady Bears will be off until Sunday, Dec. 1, when they square off against Michigan at 1 p.m. at the Crisler Center. It will be the second consecutive year Morgan State will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to face the Wolverines. Last season the Lady Bears dropped a 70-47 decision to the Wolverines (12/15/18).
