Morgan State Volleyball To Host Rival Coppin State On Tuesday

10/29/2019 5:05:00 PM

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 29, 2019)-Fresh off of completing a sweep of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe South Carolina State (S.C. State) last Friday to finish 4-1 against members of the MEAC Southern Division, Morgan State returns to northern division play on Tuesday night when it welcomes crosstown rival Coppin State. First serve is at 7 p.m. at Hill Field House.

This will be the 76th meeting in the all-time series with Morgan State holding a 63-12 lead. Last season the two teams split the season series, each winning on the other's home floor.

Morgan State (11-11, 5-4 MEAC), which is in the midst of a season-long three-match winning streak, will look to conclude the first half of the MEAC Northern Division slate with a win, while ending a three-match losing slide against division foes. The Lady Bears last northern division match was on Oct. 14 at Norfolk State, a contest Morgan State unfortunately lost in three sets to the Spartans, who entered the match winless.

Since the loss, the Lady Bears have put together a three-match winning streak, tying the longest winning streak of this season. Along the way, Morgan State earned road wins at southern division members Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M (FAMU). The win over FAMU was the Lady Bears' first victory over the Rattlers since the 1999 MEAC title match, thus ending a 15-match losing skid to the Rattlers. It was also Morgan State's first regular season victory over FAMU since 1995, ending a 24-year drought.

Morgan State returned home last Friday to wrap up MEAC cross divisional play against South Carolina State and recorded a sweep of the Lady Bulldogs to earn its third sweep of the season. The win also improved Morgan State's all-time series record over S.C. State to 23-0.

Zoe McBride recorded a match-high 16 kills and added nine digs to fall shy of her 13th double-double of the season and junior Tylar Roberson finished with nine kills to help Morgan State improve to 6-3 at home this season.

Freshman Melanie Battle, who was making her first start in her first collegiate action, totaled six kills on seven attempts with no errors for a match-high .857 attack percentage. She also added a match-high four blocks, including one solo.

Senior Roi Wallace recorded 30 assists and fellow senior Jasmin Hubbard tallied eight digs. Wallace and McBride each totaled three service aces on the night.

Coppin State (10-13, 6-3 MEAC) currently sits in second-place in the northern division standings. Like Morgan State, the Eagles also enter the contest riding a three-match winning streak, following victories over Florida A&M, Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State.

The Eagles swept S.C. State in their last outing on Sunday, while hitting a season-high .410 and holding the Lady Bulldogs to a .062 attack percentage. Miajavon Coleman finished with a match-high 13 kills and Jordan Celestine added nine. Brianna Lang recorded 30 assists and Ashley Roman collected a match-high 12 digs.
