BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 9, 2019)-The Morgan State women's basketball team will close out its season-long five-game homestand when it welcomes South Carolina State to Hill Field House on Saturday, Jan. 12 for a 2 p.m. tip-off. The Lady Bears have gone 2-2 during this homestand and are 3-4 at home this season.
BEAR CLAWS: The Lady Bears (3-13, 1-1 MEAC) are coming off a 63-47 victory over Savannah State on Monday. The win extended Morgan State's winning streak to four straight against the Lady Tigers, as Morgan State improved to 8-6 all-time against Savannah State.
Adre'onia Coleman, who was named MEAC Player of the Week on Tuesday, recorded her third straight double-double and sixth of the season. Coleman finished with 24 points and 15 rebounds, both game highs.
Naomi Bolasingh scored 10 points, while
Jihayah Chavis and
Kayla Horn each added eight points, as all seven Lady Bears, who played, scored.
Dezyree Morales and Chavis would tie for game high honors in steals with four. Coleman is averaging a team-leading 16.5 points and 8.4 rebounds to lead the team. McCalla is averaging 8.8 points per contest, while Chavis and Bolasingh are adding 8.4 and 8.0 points per outing.
A LOOK AT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE: The Lady Bulldogs (7-6, 0-1 MEAC) last played on Saturday, Jan. 5, falling at home to rival and defending MEAC Tournament champion North Carolina A&T, 58-44 in the MEAC opener for both teams. Rhein Beamon scored a game-high 13 points and Taylor Brown added 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Jaquanna Murray totaled a game-high four blocks in the loss. Brown is averaging a team-high 13.6 points to go with her team-leading 7.8 rebounds per game. Kemoni Jenkins is adding 10.6 points, while Beamon is contributing 9.4 points. Murray is pulling down 7.0 boards and has a team-best 36 blocked shots.
SERIES NOTES: South Carolina State leads the all-time series, 40-36. Last season Morgan State defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 65-55 in Baltimore (1/29).
NEXT UP: Morgan State will head on the road for the first time in 2019, when it travels to the Nation's Capital to face Beltway rival Howard. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.
COLEMAN NAMED MEAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Senior guard/forward
Adre'onia Coleman was named MEAC Player of the Week (1/8). It was her second MEAC weekly honor this season for Coleman, who also earned the award (11/20). The Baltimore native averaged a double-double for the week, recording 21 points and 14.5 rebounds per contest to help the Lady Bears to a 1-1 week. Coleman began the week with 18 points and 14 rebounds to go with two assists, two steals and a block against Maryland Eastern Shore (1/5). She then dropped a game-high 24 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds in a win over Savannah State (1/7). It was her third straight double-double and sixth of the season.
COLEMAN RECORDS SIXTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Adre'onia Coleman picked up her fifth double-double of the season in the loss to Maryland Eastern Shore (1/5). Coleman would score a game-high 18 points and pull down a game-high 14 rebounds. The Baltimore native would also add two assists, two steals and a block in 40 minutes of play.
FARWELL: The Lady Bears game against Savannah State (1/7) marked the final meeting in Baltimore between the two programs as members of the MEAC. Savannah State will leave the conference and return to the Division II level at the end of the 2018-19 academic calendar. Morgan State and the Lady Tigers will square off one final time during the regular season in their annual 'Orange & Blue' battle on Monday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Tiger Arena in Savannah, Ga.

th in the NCAA, while her six double-doubles ranks 34

DAVIS RECORDS VICTORY No. 370: Morgan State head coach Ed Davis Jr. recorded career coaching victory 370, following the Lady Bears' win over UMass Lowell (12/29). Davis, who is in his seventh season with the Lady Bears and third as head coach, has an overall record of 371-292. He has guided his teams to a total of four NCAA Tournament appearances, while at Bowie State (3) and Delaware State (1) and two Division II Sweet 16 appearances.
COLEMAN HAS CAREER DAY: Senior
Adre'onia Coleman scored a career-high 26 points in the Lady Bears' loss to UMBC (12/20). The 5-foot-10 forward, shot 8-of-16 from the floor, while adding six rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block against the Retrievers.
REMATCH: Five of the Lady Bears' non-conference opponents (Lincoln-Pa., Central Connecticut, Florida International, West Virginia, UMass Lowell) will be rematches from the 2017-18 campaign. Morgan State went 4-1 a year ago against those opponents with its lone loss coming at then 10th-ranked West Virginia. Morgan State finished 1-4 this season in those rematch games with the lone win coming against UMass Lowell (12/29).
LADY BEARS TAKE IN NBA GAME IN MOTOWN: The Lady Bears concluded their trip to Ann Arbor, Mich., by attending the Boston Celtics-Detroit Pistons game on Saturday, Dec. 15 at the new Little Caesars Arena in downtown Detroit. Following the game the team got to go on the court and attempt a free throw shot, before meeting and taking pictures with Celtics players Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. The host Pistons defeated Boston, 113-104. It was the first time the program caught an NBA game since 2014, when they went to Phillips Arena to see the home team Atlanta Hawks take on the Utah Jazz, prior to the Lady Bears' season opener at the University of Georgia.
13-DAY LAYOFF: The Lady Bears ended a season-long 13-day layoff when they took the floor against the University of Michigan (12/18). It was Morgan State's first game since playing at Florida International on Dec. 2. The layoff was so that Morgan State could focus on final exams.
SOMEONE NEW: Morgan State squared off this season against two first-time opponents in Western Kentucky (11/28) and Michigan (12/15). Both contests were on the road.
DAVIS A THREE-TIME HALL OF FAMER: Morgan State head coach Ed Davis Jr. was inducted into his third Hall of Fame in September 2017, when his 2006-07 Delaware State women's basketball team was inducted for capturing the 2007 MEAC title. Davis was also inducted into the Bowie State University Hall of Fame in 2014 as a coach, where he guided the Lady Bulldogs to three CIAA titles and a pair of Division II "Sweet 16" appearances and in 2008 he was inducted into the West Virginia State University Hall of Fame as a basketball player.
