Lady Bears Win Fourth Straight Over Savannah State, 63-47

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 7, 2019)-Adre'onia Coleman recorded her third double-double in a row and sixth of the season, finishing with a game-high 24 points, while pulling down a game-high 15 rebounds, including 11 defensive boards to lead Morgan State to a 63-47 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) victory over Savannah State on Monday at Hill Field House.

Naomi Bolasingh scored 10 points, while Jihayah Chavis and Kayla Horn each added eight points, as all seven Lady Bears, who played would score. Dezyree Morales and Chavis would tie for game high honors in steals with four.

The win extends the Lady Bears' winning streak to four straight over Savannah State, as Morgan State now leads the series, 8-6.

The contest also marked the final meeting between the two programs in Baltimore as MEAC members. Savannah State is expected to leave the conference and the Division I level at the end of the 2018-19 athletic season and return to Division II.

Savannah State (3-8, 1-1 MEAC) was led by Ta'Quasia Lampkin, who came off the bench to score a team-high 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting. Jacquece Alston added 10 points and six rebounds, while Jalea Gray came off the bench to grab a team-best nine rebounds for the Lady Tigers.

The guests scored the game's first two points and would not reclaim the lead until the third quarter when Alston hit a free throw to complete a three-point play to give Savannah State a 31-30 lead with 6:24 left in the quarter.

The Lady Bears (3-13, 1-1 MEAC) held a 44-43 lead at the end of the third quarter and would outscore their guests 19-4 in the fourth quarter for the 16-point victory. Morgan State began the fourth quarter scoring 11 straight points to cap off a 13-1 run to take a 57-44 lead.

Le'Andrea Gillis would knock down a three-pointer to stop the run and cut the deficit to 57-47 with 5:14 remaining in the game. That would be the final points of the contest for the Lady Tigers, as Morgan State closed out the game scoring the final six points.

Morgan State would shoot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) for the game, but was 0-for-11 from three-point range. Savannah State shot 28.6 percent (16-of-56) from the floor and was 5-of-20 (25 percent) from beyond the arc.

The Lady Bears will close out their season-long five-game homestand on Saturday, Jan. 12 when they entertain the Lady Bulldogs of South Carolina State at 2 p.m. at Hill Field House.

S.C. State (7-8, 0-1 MEAC) dropped a 58-44 decision at home to defending MEAC Tournament champion North Carolina A&T in the MEAC opener for both teams on Saturday, Jan. 5 in Orangeburg, S.C.
