Morgan State Wins Second Straight; Defeats S.C. State, 62-51

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 12, 2019)-The Lady Bears had four players score in double figures and for the first time this season they recorded back-to-back victories, following a 62-51 win over visiting South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

Adre'onia Coleman led Morgan State (4-13, 2-1 MEAC) with 17 points and eight rebounds. Ashia McCalla came off the bench to score 14 points and tied Coleman with a team-high eight rebounds. Jihayah Chavis and Kayla Horn each added 10 points, as Morgan State concluded its five-game homestand with a 3-2 record.

South Carolina State (7-9, 0-2 MEAC) was led by Taylor Brown, who scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Brown also totaled a game-high four steals.

Morgan State, which held a 34-19 advantage at halftime, took its largest lead of the game at 18 points (37-19) after a three-pointer in the right corner by Horn with 9:07 left in the third quarter.

The Lady Bulldogs would score the next nine points in part of a 17-3 run over a span of 7 minutes and 16 seconds to bring S.C. State within 40-36 with 1:51 remaining in the quarter. Taylor would close out the run, scoring eight consecutive points.  

The four-point deficit was as close as the guests would get, as Morgan State ended the period on a 6-0 spurt to take a 46-36 lead after three quarters of play.

Morgan State began the fourth quarter with Coleman scoring six straight points, as the Lady Bears increased their lead to 52-38 with 8:07 left in the contest. Chavis later connected on a three-pointer to up the hosts lead to 56-42 at the 4:39 mark. 

S.C. State went on a mini 7-2 run, capped off by two free throws by Brown with 1:44 left in the game to bring the Lady Bulldogs within 58-49. Chavis would scored back-to-back baskets to put the guests away and give the Lady Bears their third win in their last four games.

The Lady Bears return to action on Monday, Jan. 14, when they travel to the Nation's Capital to take on the Howard Lady Bison. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.

Howard (9-7, 2-1 MEAC) defeated Bethune-Cookman, 60-41 on Saturday to end the Wildcats' 18-game MEAC road winning streak.
