Lady Bears Done In By Howard's Big Second Quarter, 79-56

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Jan. 15, 2019)-Jayla Thornton scored a game-high 20 points and Sarah Edmond added 17, as Howard defeated visiting Morgan State, 79-56 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game at Burr Gymnasium on Tuesday.
 
Asia McCants came off the bench to score 10 points, Ayonna Williams added 10 points and Imani Bryant grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds, as the Lady Bison (10-7, 3-1 MEAC) improved to 51-19 all-time against Morgan State.
 
Morgan State (4-14, 2-2 MEAC) was led by Adre'onia Coleman's game-high 20 points and six rebounds. Coleman also tallied a game-high two blocks and a team-high three steals. Kayla Horn finished with 11 points and Ashia McCalla came off the bench to add 10.
 
The Lady Bison broke open what was a 16-13 advantage after a quarter of play, by outscoring Morgan State 27-7 in the second period en route to a second straight win over the Lady Bears.
 
Howard used an 11-0 run to take a 29-14 lead with 3:34 remaining in the half. The guests then put together an 8-0 spurt to extend their lead to 43-18. Horn ended Howard's run and the half with a layup as time expired to cut the deficit to 23 points at 43-20.
 
The Lady Bears played even with Howard in the second half, as both teams scored a combined 36 points apiece. But the Lady Bears' second quarter performance was too much to overcome.
 
Morgan State would shoot 40 percent (18-of-45) from the floor, including 3-of-8 (.375) from beyond the three-point arc.
 
Howard finished 22-of-60 (.367) shooting for the game and was 6-of-13 (.462) from three-point range.
 
The Lady Bison would record 13 steals, six of which came from Williams. Howard would total 24 points off of Morgan turnovers. Howard would also outscore Morgan, 12-2 in fast break points, 13-2 in second chance points and 26-20 in the Paint.
 
The Lady Bears will now go on the road to take on the defending MEAC champion Lady Aggies of North Carolina A&T State on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Corbett Sports Center in Greensboro, N.C.
 
N.C. A&T was a 51-49 winner at Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday.
