Morgan State Falls To Defending MEAC Champion N.C. A&T, 62-29

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Jan. 19, 2019)-Charme Lilly scored a game-high 15 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-5 from three-point range and C'Coriea Foy added a game-high 15 points, as North Carolina A&T State defeated Morgan State, 62-29 in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday afternoon at the Corbett Sports Center.

Charnise Tyler grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and Alexus Lessears pulled down nine, as North Carolina A&T (7-10, 4-0 MEAC) held a 52-30 rebounding advantage over Morgan State.

The defending MEAC champion Lady Aggies would also outscore Morgan State, 26-10 in the paint and held a 19-0 cushion in bench scoring. N.C. A&T also outscored the Lady Bears in second chance points (9-2) and fast break scoring (7-2).

Morgan State (4-15, 2-3 MEAC) was led by Kayla Horn, who scored 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and Naomi Bolasingh added 10 points. Elizabeth Sherrill grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The 29 points scored was the lowest scoring output for the Lady Bears this season.

After scoring just five and seven points, respectively, in the first two quarters, the Lady Bears would get outscored 12-11 in the third, as the hosts extended their lead to 45-23 after three periods of play.

N.C. A&T would hold Morgan State under 10 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the guests 17-6. The Lady Aggies scored the first six points in the period to increase their lead to 51-23 with 7:38 remaining. Horn, who scored all six of Morgan State's fourth quarter points, scored the final points for the Lady Bears on a layup with 1:39 left in the game to cut the deficit to 59-29. A three-pointer by Kendra Ross with 1:03 remaining, rounded out the game's scoring and gave the Lady Aggies their largest lead of the contest at 33 points.

Morgan State shot 12-of-54 (22 percent) for the game and was 2-for-8 (25 percent) from beyond the three-point arc and connected on just 3-of-12 (25 percent) from the free throw line. 

The Lady Aggies shot 41 percent (22-of-53) from the field and hit 4-of-13 from three-point range. N.C. A&T also converted 14-of-21 (66.7 percent) free throws.

Jihayah Chavis scored a basket with 3:58 remaining in the first quarter to bring the guests within 7-5. Not only would that be the Lady Bears' last points of the quarter, but it would also be as close as the Lady Bears would get, as N.C. A&T scored the next seven points to close out the period and used a combined 16-2 run to take a 23-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

A three-pointer from the left wing by Lilly with 4:54 left, capped off the Lady Aggies' run. Morgan State got back-to-back baskets, a three-pointer by Bolasingh and a layup by Horn to make it a 25-12 game. But the hosts ended the first half scoring eight straight points to take a 33-12 advantage into the locker room.

The Lady Bears will head to Durham, N.C. to take on the Eagles of North Carolina Central on Monday, Jan. 21. Tip-off is at 2 p.m. at McDougald-McLendon Arena. NCCU was a 62-57 winner against Coppin State on Saturday.

Morgan State leads the all-time series, 10-5. Last season the Lady Bears had their three-game winning streak over NCCU snapped, following a 60-57 loss in Durham (1/15/18).
