Bears Stun Howard in Overtime, 89-86

Junior guard Stanley Davis finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 15, 2019) -- Junior guard Stanley Davis hit the go-ahead free throw with 48 seconds left in overtime, and the Morgan State Bears outlasted the Howard Bison for an 89-86 victory Tuesday night at Burr Gymnasium in Washington, D.C.

Davis, the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, helped the Bears end a seven-game road losing streak and a two-game skid when he scored five of his team-high 21 points in the extra session.

The Bears exhaled as junior forward David Syfax was fouled hard by Andre Toure on a breakaway. The Detroit product stepped up and knocked in a pair of clutch free throws to give the Bears an 83-80 lead with 27 seconds remaining. The Bison would get no closer.

Syfax finished with a season-high 16 points (6-6 FT), seven rebounds and two blocked shots off the bench. Sophomore guard Kyson Rawls added 17 points with two assists and two steals. Freshman guard Sherwyn Devonish-Prince had 18 points and made four free throws in a game-deciding 9-0 run in overtime.

Howard's (7-10, 2-2) Charles Williams led all scorers with 25 points (8-22 FG) and Chad Lott finished with nine of his 24 points in overtime.

RJ Cole blocked a shot by Devonish-Prince and raced to the other end of the floor where he converted a 3-pointer to give Howard a 70-61 lead with 2:34 left to play.

Senior guard Martez Cameron buried a 3-pointer and Kyson Rawls hit a pair of free throws with 44 seconds to go to trim the lead to 70-68.

Devonish-Prince was fouled after an over-the-back call with 7.4 left to go. The freshman hit his free throws and RJ Cole was fouled on the ensuing inbounds with 6 seconds remaining and Howard leading 72-70. Cole missed the front end of the one-and-one and the Bears raced the ball up the floor where Rawls finished at the rim with a layup to send the game into overtime as the horn sounded.

The Bears commanded most of the first half of action behind fast-paced play. The Bears scored 21 points off of 13 Bison turnovers in the first half.

Antonio Gillespie hit a 3-pointer to give MSU a 21-15 lead midway through the first half.

The Bears largest lead of the half was 32-25, but the Bison used a 6-2 run to trim MSU's lead to 34-31 at the intermission.

The game was originally scheduled for Monday ((Jan 14) but was postponed because of snowy weather.
