NEW ORLEANS, La. (Sept. 7, 2018)-The Morgan State Lady Bears and the Prairie View A&M volleyball teams had not met on the court since Sept. 17, 1999. Morgan State would win that match 3-0.
Nineteen seasons later the two squads would once again meet, this time on the opening day of the New Orleans Invitational. Zoe McBride would total 11 kills and Cristen Coryatt added nine, as Morgan State once again shutout the Panthers, 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-16).
Morgan State (3-5) improved to 2-0 against Prairie View A&M and is now 8-0 all-time against the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).Â
Jasmin Hubbard recorded a match-high 16 digs and Roi Wallace fell shy of a double-double, finishing with nine digs to go with her match-high 31 assists. Wallace, who has 1,874 assist for her career, is now 97 assists away from moving into third-place and passing former Lady Bear, Jentri Fullove (1,970 assists from 2006-07).
The Lady Bears hit .322 for the match behind Monette Daniels and Brook Adams each hitting .571 with four kills on seven attempts and no errors. Morgan State finished with 37 kills and had a set-best .448 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 29 attempts and no errors in the opening set.
Daniels and the Lady Bears were all over the PVAM hitters. Daniels would set a career-high seven blocks, including two solo. McBride and Kalysia Bates each added four blocks, as Morgan State held an 11.0-1.0 advantage in blocks over the Panthers.
Perhaps the only negative in the match for the Lady Bears was their serving. Morgan State would have five service aces, but committed 11 service errors.
The Panthers (0-7) were led by Jaylan Thomas, who tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs. Christen Augustine added 10 digs. Alyssa Cataldo had a team-leading 12 assists and Erica Jimenez finished with 10 assists.
PVAM was limited to -.010 hitting for the match with 26 kills and 27 errors on 96 attempts.Â
The Lady Bears will close out the opening day with a 5:30 p.m. EST match against another SWAC member, Jackson State. The Lady Tigers were a 3-2 loser to Bethune-Cookman earlier in the day. Morgan State is 1-0 against Jackson State, winning their lone meeting on Sept. 4, 1998 in the Kangaroo Classic in Kansas City, Mo.
