Softball Clinches MEAC Northern Division Title; Records School Record 26th Win

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 28, 2018)-The Morgan State softball team accomplished two of its goals on Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bears defeated crosstown rival Coppin State 3-0 in Game 2 of a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division doubleheader at Lois T. Murray Field.

Morgan State's victory, coupled with Norfolk State's 5-2 victory over Hampton, the Lady Bears became the 2018 MEAC Northern Division champs for the first-time ever, since the MEAC went to divisional play in 2009. The victory was also win No. 26 for the team, breaking the previous program record of 25 victories set by the 1998 squad.

However, the Lady Bears (26-15, 14-3 MEAC), who dropped the opener to Coppin State 1-0, would have their school record of four consecutive MEAC series sweeps come to an end. The loss would also prevent the Lady Bears from tying the school mark of 16 MEAC wins in a season, which was also set by the 1998 team (16-0).

Game 1 was a classic pitching duel between Coppin's Madison Didion and Morgan State's Stephanie Rundlett. Didon (13-9) would surrender three hits, a walk and had seven strikeouts in a complete game, while Rundlett (12-8), allowed one run on four hits and threw a season-high 11 strikeouts in a complete game.

Coppin State (13-21, 9-10 MEAC) would break a scoreless game in the sixth inning when Hatika James scored on a sac fly hit by M Narvaez, giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead, which proved to be all Coppin needed.

The hosts struck in the first inning of the nightcap, when Giselle Gorosave tripled to center field to score Damali Young for a 1-0 lead.

Morgan State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Young, who hit a one-out triple to right, later scored on a single hit to left center by Alvarez.

The Lady Bears added an insurance run in the fifth inning when Alvarez grounded out to short with bases loaded to score Jalian Young to extend the lead to 3-0.

Morgan State will close out the series and regular season on Sunday at noon. It will mark Senior Day for three Lady Bear seniors (Anissa Morales, Danielle Pitpit and Amy Begg), who will play their final home contest.
