Morgan State Defeats Coppin State In Series Finale, 1-0; Begg Pitches One-Hitter

Amy Begg sets single-season mark for shutouts and records 500th strikeout

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 29, 2018)-The Morgan State softball team closed out the regular season in style for its three seniors (Amy Begg, Anissa Morales, Danielle Pitpit), as the Lady Bears defeated crosstown rival Coppin State, 1-0 on Sunday afternoon in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) finale for Morgan State at Lois T. Murray Field.

Morgan State (27-15, 15-3 MEAC) would take 2-of-3 games from its rivals, to close out the regular season winning five consecutive MEAC series, four of which came by way of three-game sweeps.

Begg, had a 'Senior Day' to remember, adding two more accomplishments to what has been a record setting career.

For the second weekend in a row, Begg carried a no-hit bid deep into the game, before having it broken up. Last weekend against Maryland Eastern Shore she was one out away from reaching the seventh inning, before the Hawks got a hit. This time the Christchurch, New Zealand native was two outs away in the seventh inning from completing the no-hitter, before Coppin State's Nia Bowe singled to short to end the attempt.

Begg, who improved to 15-6 on the season with the win, finished the game allowing one hit and no walks, while tossing six strikeouts. She would reach the 500 strikeouts plateau in the fourth inning on her fifth strikeout of the game when she fanned Coppin State's Nicole Ullman to end the inning. Begg would also strikeout the entire side in the third inning.

However, Begg wasn't done yet. The 6-foot-2 pitcher, who entered the contest as the holder of five Morgan State pitching records – all of which she broke this season – added a sixth one. Begg, would earn her eighth shutout of the season, breaking the previous single-season school mark of seven, which she set a year ago.

The Lady Bears' lone run of the game came in the first inning when Damali Young stole third base and scored on the play on a throwing error to put Morgan State up 1-0.

Young finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Evvie Buehlman and Stormy Zyzyk each recorded a hit. Young would also finish with two stolen bases, to increase her school record to 96 for her career.

Morgan State will be off until the 2018
MEAC Softball Tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla. (May 9-12). The Lady Bears, who on Saturday captured their first-ever MEAC Northern Division title, will be the No. 1 seed out of the northern division.
