Lady Bears Defeat Delaware State In Series Opener, 11-0

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 14, 2018)-The Morgan State softball team scored 10 runs in the first two innings, including seven runs in the second, to defeat Delaware State, 11-0 in five innings in the opening game of its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Lois T. Murray Field.

The Lady Bears (19-13, 8-2 MEAC) extended their season-long winning streak to nine straight games, while Delaware State (9-24, 7-3 MEAC) lost its fifth consecutive game.

In a battle for first-place in the MEAC Northern Division, the Lady Bears wasted no time jumping on the Hornets, finishing the game with 11 runs on 10 hits in the five inning victory.

The Lady Bears struck for three of those runs in the first inning to quickly build a 3-0 advantage over the visiting Hornets. Two batters into the lineup, Giselle Alvarez tripled to right center to score Damali Young for the first run. Evvie Buehlman singled to second base to score Alvarez and m Browdy grounded out to second base to score Gabriella Gorosave for the third run of the inning.

Morgan State went back to work in the second inning and produced seven runs to extend its lead to 10-0 and just about put the game out of reach.
Back-to-back RBI singles hit by Evvie Buehlman and Anissa Morales extended Morgan's lead to 5-0. Mikaela Browdy then walked with bases loaded to increase the Lady Bears' cushion to 6-0.

That was only the beginning. Hope Kinney doubled just between first and right field to drive in two more runs in Buehlman and Morales and Browdy would also score on the play on the throw, making it 9-0. Caitlyn Williams then stepped in and nearly hit the ball in the same vicinity as Kinney did, which allowed Jalian Young, who pinch ran for Kinney to score and make it a 10-0 game.

The Lady Bears' final run came in the fourth inning when Stormy Zyzyk scored on a throwing error by the Hornets' first baseman.
Buehlman went 3-for-3 at the plate with 2RBI and a run scored from her designated player position to lead the Lady Bears. Morales and Williams each went 2-for-2 with a run and RBI.

Stephanie Rundlett, who picked up her ninth victory of the season, finished with four strikeouts, upping her season total to 79. Rundlett (10-6) would limit the Hornets to two hits and a walk, while earning her first shutout victory.

Delaware State's two hits were recorded by Vanessa Washington, who went 1-for-1 on the day and Khaliyah Flournory, who finished 1-for-2.

Hannah Shields (4-10) was charged with the loss. She surrendered nine runs on five hits, walked three batters and tallied three strikeouts in 1 and 1/3 innings of work.
