Lady Bears Split MEAC Opener Against Hampton

Damali Young sets school's stolen base mark with 79

HAMPTON, Va. (March 17, 2018)-A year ago Morgan State was in contention for its first-ever Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division Championship heading into the final weekend of the regular season. All that stood in the Lady Bears' way were the Hampton Lady Pirates. Hampton would end up sweeping the three-game series and claimed the division title, while Morgan State fell to third-place.

On Saturday the Lady Bears opened up the 2018 MEAC slate on the road at Hampton for what will be the final MEAC series against the Lady Pirates. Hampton will leave the conference at the end of the season and join the Big South Conference for the 2018-19 athletic season.

The Lady Pirates would win Game 1 of the doubleheader, 4-2 and Morgan State would take Game 2 by a score of 4-1 at the Lady Pirates Stadium.

Morgan State's victory ended a four-game losing skid to the Lady Pirates and was the Lady Bears' first win over Hampton since an 8-2 victory at Hampton on March 20, 2016.

The two teams will conclude their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at noon.

Game 1
Gabriella Gorosave went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored to lead Morgan State. Hope Kinney was 1-for-3 with 2RBI. Amy Begg (6-6) was charged with the loss, while Hampton's Allyson Babinsack earned the win and improved to 5-5 on the season. Both Begg and Babinsack each recorded three strikeouts.

Morgan State (9-11, 1-1 MEAC) had bases loaded and one out in the first inning, but was unable to capitalize. Babinsack was able to get out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground out to shortstop to end the Lady Bears' threat.

The Lady Pirates (10-13, 1-1 MEAC) got on the board first in the second inning when Sarah Kollas scored on a wild pitch while Morgan State was trying to intentionally walk Hampton's DaSha Hill. Lorena Alvarez would make it a 2-0 Hampton lead when Hill was caught in a run down, allowing Alvarez to cross the plate.

Morgan State evened the score in the top of the fifth inning when Hope Kinney doubled to left center to score Giselle Alvarez and Gorosave.

Hampton would waste no time getting the two runs back in the bottom of the inning, as Cassidy Blackwell doubled to right centerfield to score Daniella Milloy and Hill, giving the hosts a 4-2 lead.

Blackwell went 2-for-2 at the plate with 2RBI and Kollas had two hits in three at bats with a run scored to lead Hampton.

Game 2
Damali Young led off the game with a single to right field then stole second base in the first inning to become Morgan State's all-time leader in stolen bases with 79.

The Lady Bears would break a scoreless game and take a 2-0 lead in the third inning on a fielder's choice, sacrifice bunt hit by Giselle Alvarez. Caitlyn Williams would score from third base and Alvarez would round the bases and score on the play from a throwing error on the Hampton catcher.

Morgan State got back on the board when Hope Kinney singled up the middle to score Alvarez in the top of the fifth inning to extend the Lady Bears' lead to 3-0.

The very next inning Jalian Young singled in Mikaela
Browdy in the top of the sixth inning to give the Lady Bears a 4-0 advantage.

Hampton would score its lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth when Kial Watts singled to second to score DaSha Hill.

Stephanie Rundlett picked up the victory for Morgan State and improved to 3-4 on the season. Rundlett would pitch a complete game, allowing one run on four hits and threw a game-high eight strikeouts.
