Lady Bears Fall At Michigan, 70-47

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (Dec. 15, 2018)-Naz Hillmon came off the bench to record a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds, both game highs and Deja Church finished with 16 points to lead Michigan to a 70-47 victory over Morgan State on Saturday morning at the Crisler Center.

The Wolverines improved to 8-3 on the season, while Morgan State dropped to 1-10.

Morgan State, which was returning to the hardwood for the first time since a 13-day layoff due to exams, was led by Jihayah Chaivs, Adre'onia Coleman and Ashia McCalla, who all scored 12 points. Coleman added a team-high six rebounds, while Chavis finished with a game-high four steals.

Michigan shot 45 percent (27-of-60) for the game and held a 50-22 advantage over Morgan State in points in the paint. The Wolverines also had a 47-20 rebounding cushion over the Lady Bears. Morgan State shot 35 percent (19-of-54) and recorded 11 steals.

Michigan native Kayla Horn (six points, three rebounds, two steals), scored the game's first points and the Lady Bears held a 9-7 lead with 5:14 left in the first quarter, following a basket by Chavis. However, the host Wolverines would close out the period holding Morgan State scoreless, while going on a 13-0 run to take a 20-9 lead after one.

Back-to-back baskets by Coleman in the second period completed a 7-0 run by the visiting Lady Bears, bringing them within 26-18 with 5:18 left in the second quarter. Church would connect on 4-of-4 free throws down the stretch to give the hosts a 32-23 halftime lead.

A layup by Horn to begin the third quarter brought the guests within seven points (32-25), but that would be as close as the Lady Bears would get. Michigan would respond with 10 straight points to extend its lead to 42-25 with 5:25 left in the third.

The Lady Bears will conclude their brief two-game road swing on Tuesday, Dec. 18 when they visit the Mountaineers of West Virginia. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va.
