MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 18, 2018)-Naomi Davenport scored a game-high 16 points to lead four Mountaineer players in double figures scoring, as West Virginia defeated visiting Morgan State, 72-37 on Tuesday night inside the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia has now won two straight over Morgan State and leads the all-time series, 2-1. Tonight's victory comes exactly one year to the day of the Mountaineers' 84-41 victory last season over Morgan State (12/18/17).
West Virginia (7-2) would used its height advantage down low to hold a 32-16 advantage in points in the paint over Morgan State.Â
When Davenport wasn't going to work and attacking the Lady Bears, Theresa Ekhelar was. The 6-foot-6 center recorded a double-double with 11 points and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds to help the Mountaineers to a 40-28 rebounding advantage over their guests.
Tynice Martin finished with 11 points and Katrina Pardee added 10 points for the Mountaineers, who have won three straight games.
Morgan State (1-11) was led by Adre'onia Coleman, who finished with 14 points and six rebounds, both team highs. Naomi Bolasingh finished with eight points, while Jihayah Chavis added six points, four rebounds, a team-high three assists and tied a game high with two steals.
Dezyree Morales provided the Lady Bears with a spark, stepping up on the defensive end to take a couple charges, while finishing with six points, three rebounds, an assist and a block. Kayla Horn and Ashia McCalla each grabbed five rebounds.
Morgan State will now head home to face local rival the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on Thursday, Dec. 20. Tip-off is at 5:30 pm at Hill Field House.
The Retrievers (6-5) enter the contest riding a season-long five-game losing skid after beginning the season 6-0. UMBC is coming off a 45-42 home loss to Hofstra (12/9) in its last game.
UMBC leads the series, 13-12. The two programs last met on Dec. 7, 2016 with Morgan State earning a 69-61 victory at RAC Arena.
