WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 15, 2017)-Cristen Coryatt recorded a match-high 14 kills, while Natashia Barker, who was playing in a different position, added eight kills and finished with a match-high nine digs for the Lady Bears. However, it wasn't enough, as Morgan State would fall to Western Michigan, 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 25-16) in the opener of the Courtyard by Marriott Tournament hosted by the University of North Carolina Wilmington on Friday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.
Roi Wallace finished with 28 assists, giving her 1,050 for her career. She is now 172 assists away from moving into ninth all-time at Morgan State. Wallace also added two kills and Kheanna Landrum recorded seven digs.
The Lady Bears fell to 1-10 on the season, while Western Michigan improved to 6-3 and extended their season-long winning streak to four straight.Â
Western Michigan was paced by Rachel Bontrager, who finished with 12 kills and a career-high attack percentage of .360. Quianna Ware added 11 kills and a .429 attack percentage. Kathleen Reilly collected a match-high 13 digs and Mary Murphy totaled a match-high 31 assists.
The Broncos finished the match with a season-high team hitting percentage of .379, while Morgan State finished with a .204 attack percentage.
Morgan State was held without a block for the first time this season. The Broncos finished with a total of two blocks.
The Lady Bears return to action on Saturday, Sept. 16, when they take on host UNC Wilmington at 12:30 p.m. The match can be seen live on uncwsports.com. The host Seahawks defeated Liberty, 3-1 on Friday night. Morgan State will then close out the tournament and its non-conference slate against Liberty at 4:30 p.m.
