Morgan State Cheerleaders earns Gold Bid to NCA Nationals

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The 2017-18 Morgan State University cheerleading team struck gold this past weekend (Aug. 11-13) at the National Cheer Association College cheerleading camp at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

It marked the first time Morgan State captured a Gold bid to the NCA Nationals.

"These ladies never worked so hard to achieve a goal," said head coach Theresa Gibson. "This combined effort from both the Competition Team members as well as the Spirit Team members made me question my sanity. But sometimes you just have to go with your gut instinct and wish for the best."

The team of 33 women competed against teams from around the country, in and out of their division. The women finished first in the Divisional Evaluation (All Girl Division I and II category), and came out with the third-highest overall score in the entire camp. This led the team to a gold paid bid to the National Championships in April in Daytona, Florida.

Morgan State was one of eight teams to make it to the finals, in which Louisville took first place.

"Team captain Cameron Miles led the charge of securing the Gold Bid with a lot of support from Timia Hord and the rest of the cast of seniors. Combined with an undying effort from all of the ladies, this experience proved to be memorable and rewarding for all involved."

The NCA College Camp is formatted so that the first two days are focused on learning new skills, creating routines, and preparing for the upcoming season. The final day of camp transitions to competition, as teams compete for top honors in their division and ultimately a bid to the NCA College Nationals, which will be held April 5-7, 2018, in Daytona Beach, Fla. Bids to the NCA College Nationals are awarded based on the overall points earned at the camp.

Morgan State has been attending the NCA College Nationals since 1989 and this spring the team will attempt to bring back a national championship title to East Cold Spring Lane.

The Morgan State cheer team will perform at home- and select football games during t
he fall before resuming competition in early 2018.
