BALTIMORE, Md. (Apr. 5, 2017)-Damali Young went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored to lead the Lady Bears softball team to a 3-1 non-conference victory at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) on Wednesday afternoon at the UMBC Softball Stadium.

The win completed a three-game season series sweep of the Retrievers for Morgan State, with all three games being played at UMBC. The Lady Bears also improved to a perfect 4-0 on the road.

Morgan State (14-11) got on the board with two runs in the opening inning. Audrianna Alvarez hit an RBI single to center field to score Young for the first run. Alvarez later stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the UMBC second baseman, which allowed Kate Vosper to score on the play and give the Lady Bears a 2-0 advantage.

UMBC (14-19) got a run right back in the bottom half of the first, when Maddie Daigneau scored on a throwing error by the Lady Bears, to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.

The Lady Bears would score their third and final run of the game in the second inning, when Vosper (1-for-2, RBI and a run scored) doubled to left center to score Young to make it a 3-1 lead.

Morgan State pitchers Erica Hawkins, Kabria Arnold and Amy Begg all surrendered two hits to Retriever batters. The three would combine to hold UMBC to just one run on six hits.

Begg would pick up the win to improve to 12-5 on the season. Begg threw two strikeouts in 4.1 innings of work.

UMBC's Kelly Lane (1-3) was charged with the loss. Lane surrendered three runs on four hits, three walks and threw one strikeout in three innings of work.

Toni Santonastasso finished the day going 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Retrievers.

Morgan State will take a few days off before hosting Norfolk State this Saturday, April 8 in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Lady Bears and Spartans will conclude their three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference weekend series with a single-game on Sunday at noon.
