BALTIMORE, Md. (April 8, 2017)-The Morgan State offense put together a combined 13 runs on 15 hits and junior pitcher
Amy Begg totaled 13 strikeouts, as the Lady Bears swept visiting Norfolk State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division doubleheader on Saturday at Lois T. Murray Field. The Lady Bears would win the opener 9-0 in six innings, before claiming a 4-0 victory in Game 2.
Sophomore
Damali Young led the Lady Bears going a combined 4-for-6 at the plate with five runs scored and 2RBI. Young would hit her first homer of the season and second of her career in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 1 to give the Lady Bears a 9-0 advantage and end the game due to the eight-run rule.
Senior
Kate Vosper finished the day with three hits on six at bats with 4RBI and a run scored. Begg improved to 14-5 on the season after earning two wins on the day. Begg pitched a total of 13 innings and allowed no runs on nine Spartans hits, while throwing six and seven strikeouts, respectively, in the two games.
The doubleheader sweep marks the first time the Lady Bears have swept Norfolk State in a doubleheader since March 28, 2004 in a series also played at Lois T. Murray Field. Saturday was also the first time Morgan State has ever won a MEAC doubleheader against the Spartans since Norfolk State moved into the northern division in 2012.
Morgan State (16-11, 5-0 MEAC) improved to 6-1 this season at the newly refurbished Lois T. Murray Field, while Norfolk State (9-15, 2-6 MEAC) fell to 0-7 on the road. The Lady Bears also remain in a first-place tie with Hampton (10-5, 5-0 MEAC) atop the northern division standings. The Lady Pirates swept their doubleheader against Delaware State on Saturday.
The 16 wins are the most victories since 2011, when that Lady Bears' squad also won 16 games. Winners of four straight and nine of its last 10 games, Morgan State is now nine wins shy of tying the school record for victories in a season at 25, set in 1998.
