Morgan State Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Visiting Mount St. Mary’s

BALTIMORE, Md. (April 4, 2017)-Fresh off their three-game weekend sweep of rival Howard in both its Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and home opener at the newly refurbished Lois T. Murray Field, the Lady Bears returned home to host Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Bears (13-11) would split the non-conference doubleheader with the Mount, dropping the first game 4-3, before claiming an 11-6 victory in the nightcap in six innings, in a game which was called due to darkness.

Morgan State improved to 4-1 this season inside the friendly confines of Lois T. Murray Field, with the spilt. It's the best start at home for the Lady Bears since 2011, when Morgan State started 5-1 at home.

Game 1
Mount St. Mary's Rachel Heinze hit a three-run homer in the top of the first inning to put the guests up 3-0. That lead would hold until the fourth, when the Lady Bears got on the board, following a RBI single by Haylee Bobos to score Audrianna Alvarez and cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Mount (10-20) extended their lead to 4-1 when Shea McFarland drove in Erin Meagher on a RBI single in the sixth inning.

The Lady Bears would not go away, as they scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull within 4-3. Giselle Alvarez scored the first run on a wild pitch and Kate Vosper singled in Damali Young to cut the Mount lead to 4-3 with just one out.

Mount St. Mary's would then make a pitching change, bringing in starting pitcher Sam Lichtner back in the game. Lichtner would face just two Morgan State batters to end the game and preserve the one-run win for Mount St. Mary's.

Game 2
The second game saw both teams put together one big scoring inning each. The difference was the Lady Bears scored more runs during their scoring outburst.

Trailing 1-0, the visiting Mount scored five runs in the second inning to take a 5-1 lead. A two-run double by Rachel Heinze, followed by a RBI double by Lindsay Heize capped off the Mount's big inning.

Morgan State got a run back in the bottom of the second when Giselle Alvarez singled to score Anissa Morales. However, Mount St. Mary's increased its lead to 6-2 with a run in the fourth.

The Lady Bears then scored nine runs on five hits coupled with two Mount St. Mary's errors in the bottom half of the fourth inning, while batting around to take an 11-6 lead for the game's final score.

Haylee Bobos drew a bases loaded walk, which scored Caitlyn Williams for the Lady Bears' second run of the inning, making it a 6-4 contest. Mikaela Browdy was then hit by a pitch to score Kate Vosper and keep the bases loaded. Danielle Pitpit, followed and reach base on an error on the pitcher, which scored Audrianna Alvarez and evened the score at 6-6.

The Lady Bears reclaimed the lead when Annis Morales doubled to score Browdy and give the hosts a 7-6 lead. Pitpit would score on a bases loaded walk drawn by Korynna Lara and Morales later scored on an error by the catcher to increase the Morgan State lead to 9-6. Morgan State rounded out its nine-run fourth inning when Damali Young hit a two-run single, scoring Williams and Giselle Alvarez for the 11-6 advantage.

Morgan State finished the game with 10 hits, five walks and seven walks. Aliyah Stone picked up the win, surrendering one run on three hits in 2.1 innings of work.

Morgan State will have a short turnaround, as it will visit the University of Maryland Baltimore County for a single game on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. This will be the Lady Bears third appearance this season at UMBC Softball Stadium. Morgan State took part in the UMBC First Pitch Kickoff Classic and won both meeting over the Retrievers.
