FORT COLLINS, Colo. (Dec. 20, 2017)-Morgan State concludes its two-game road swing on Thursday, Dec. 20 when it faces the Rams of Colorado State at 12 p.m. MT at Moby Arena. The Lady Bears will be looking to bounce back following their loss at West Virginia on Monday. This will be the second meeting between the two teams, with Colorado State holding a 1-0 series lead.
BEAR CLAWS: Morgan State (6-5) was dealt an 84-41 loss on Monday at 10th-ranked West Virginia. It was the second consecutive loss for the Lady Bears, after winning a season-long four straight.
Tykyrah Williams would score a team-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including 4-for-5 from three-point range to lead the Lady Bears. Morgan State has been paced by Spears' team-leading 14.7 points and team-high 7.1 rebounds per game. Spears also has a team-best 12 blocked shots and ranks second in steals with 18. Farrar is averaging 13.4 points, 5.7 rebounds to go with team highs in assists (42) and steals (31).
SCOUTING THE RAMS: Colorado State (7-3) is coming off a 71-59 non-conference victory over Prairie View A&M on Monday. The win was the second straight and fifth out of the last six for the Rams. Annie Brady recorded a double-double with a team-high 19 points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Rams. Grace Colaivalu added 16 points and Stine Austgulen recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Rams have been led by Devos, who is averaging 9.2 points per game and Tvrdy (9.1 points, 6.1 rebounds). Brady leads the team in rebounding with 6.6 boards per contest to go with 8.5 points per game.
MORGAN STATE VS. COLORADO STATE SERIES NOTES: This is the second meeting between the two teams. Colorado State won the first contest, 54-36 in the opening round of the Navy Classic on Nov. 27, 2015 in Annapolis, Md.
LADY BEARS VS. THE MOUNTAIN WEST: Morgan State enters its contest with Colorado State, a combined 1-2 all-time against the Mountain West Conference. Here's how the Lady Bears have done against members of the MW: Colorado State (0-1), New Mexico (0-1), San Jose State (1-0). Morgan State has never faced Air Force, Boise State, Fresno State, Nevada, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah State or Wyoming.
NEXT UP: Morgan State will close out its 2017 portion of its schedule and its non-conference slate when it visits UMASS Lowell on Dec. 28. It will be the first meeting between the two teams.
LAST TIMEOUT: MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (Dec. 18, 2017) - West Virginia scored the game's first eight points, held a 19-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, as the 10th-ranked Mountaineers defeated Morgan State, 84-41 on Monday at the WVU Coliseum. West Virginia (11-0) remained unbeaten on the season and extended its non-conference winning streak to 38 straight inside the WVU Coliseum. Morgan State fell to 6-5 on the season with the loss and has now dropped two straight games after winning a season-best four in a row. Teana Muldrow scored a game-high 25 points on 10-of-14 shooting and added a game-high four steals, a game-high three blocked shots, four assists and four rebounds to lead the Mountaineers. Katrina Pardee scored 21 points, while knocking down 5-of-7 three-pointers and Naomi Davenport finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists. After a season-long 12-day layoff since its last game, the Morgan State came out flat scoring a season-low four points, while being held to 2-of-13 shooting (15.4 percent) in the first quarter. The host Mountaineers however, connected on 7-of-10 shooting (70 percent) from the floor, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. A three-pointer by Davenport with 2:50 left in the second quarter capped off a 31-0 run by the host Mountaineers and gave West Virginia a 43-4 cushion.
Tykyrah Williams ended the run with a jumper and added the free throw to complete a three-point play and cut the deficit to 43-7 with 2:21 left. Williams' three-point play would end a 10 minute 26 second scoring drought for the Lady Bears, which began the last 2:47 of the first quarter. West Virginia would hold a 45-12 halftime advantage.
FARRAR ON THE RISE: Braennan "BeBe" Farrar continues to make her move up several of Morgan State's statistical charts. Farrar currently ranks fourth all-time at Morgan State in assists with 300. The St. Louis, Mo. native is tied for fifth all-time in steals with 201 and is eight steals shy of moving into fourth-place. Farrar also ranks seventh in scoring with 1,315 points.
WILLIAMS HAS BOUNCE BACK GAME: Tykyrah Williams scored a team-high 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting, including a career-best 4-for-5 from the three-point arc against 10th-ranked West Virginia (12/18). She also had eight rebounds and two assists. Williams' performance would make up for a one-point outing on 0-for-5 shooting in the previous game at Marshall (12/6).
TRACKING DAVIS TO 400 VICTORIES: Morgan State head coach
Edward Davis Jr., is 42 coaching wins away from reaching career win No. 400. Davis, who is in his second season at the helm of the Lady Bears and sixth overall, currently has a combined coaching record of 358 wins during his time at Bowie State, Delaware State and Morgan State. Ironically, Davis earned his 350th career victory on the road against his former program, Delaware State on Feb. 20, 2017 in Dover, Del.
A NEW SEASON: What a difference a year makes. Last season the Lady Bears finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 9-21 mark. This year, Morgan State head coach
Edward Davis Jr. has already guided the Lady Bears to six wins through their first nine games. A year ago the Lady Bears didn't record their sixth win until the 25
th game of the season, a 50-43 victory at home over Savannah State on Feb. 18, 2017.
DEFENDING HOME: Morgan State remained unbeaten at Hill Field House this season, when it defeated Florida International, 62-51 (12/4). Morgan improved to 5-0 at home with the win. The Lady Bears' other wins included a 55-43 defeat of NJIT (12/2), a 61-41 victory over Mount St. Mary's (Nov. 26) and two wins against Division II foes, Lincoln-Pa. (60-41) and Cheyney (123-53) in the home opener.
LADY BEARS SCORE SCHOOL RECORD 123 POINTS: The Lady Bears' 123 points in their victory over Cheyney (11/13) set a new school record for points in a game by Morgan State. The previous mark was 115 points against the University of Baltimore (1/17/83). The 70-point victory is the second largest margin of victory in school history behind an 82-point (102-20) victory over Coppin State (2/13/77).
MORGAN PICKED EIGHTH IN MEAC: Morgan State was picked to finish eighth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) preseason poll, as voted by the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Last year, the Lady Bears were picked to finish fifth, and went 9-21 overall mark and finished 7-9 in the MEAC to finish ninth. Morgan State would close out the regular season winning seven of its final eight MEAC games.
FARRAR NAMED TO PRESEASON MEAC SECOND TEAM: Senior guard
Braennan Farrar was named to the Preseason All-MEAC Second Team. A native of St. Louis, Mo., Farrar led the Lady Bears in scoring (381) with 12.7 points per game, three-pointers made (35), steals (72) and assists (81), while shooting a team-best .786 (114-of-145) from the free throw line. Farrar, who started in 28 of the 30 games played, also averaged 34.4 minutes per contest.
WILLIAMS NAMED TO PRESEASON MEAC THIRD TEAM: Senior forward
Tykyrah Williams was named to the Preseason All-MEAC Third Team. A year ago, Williams ranked second on the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game. A native of Durham, N.C., Williams started in 26 of the 30 games played and hauled in 5.7 rebounds per outing.
