Lady Bears Welcome Division Leader MDES To Hill Field House

BALTIMORE, Md. (Oct. 11, 2017)-The Morgan State volleyball team returns to the court this Friday, Oct. 13 when it welcomes division leader the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (MDES) to Hill Field House to kick off Homecoming weekend. First serve for this Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
 
The contest will also be a special one, as Morgan State's 1992 volleyball team, which captured the MEAC Championship that season, will be honored between the second and third sets. The 1992 Lady Bears squad became Morgan State's first MEAC volleyball championship team.
 
Morgan State (2-14, 1-2 MEAC) is coming off a 3-1 (9-25, 19-25, 25-21, 15-25) loss to defending MEAC Champion, Howard last Wednesday night in Baltimore. The contest was the home opener for the Lady Bears, who have now dropped their last four meetings against Howard.
 
Freshman Mykaela Ross recorded a season-high 10 kills and added six digs and a service ace, for the Lady Bears. Senior Keana Browne added nine kills and juniors Monette Daniels and Natashia Barker each had six. Sophomore Roi Wallace totaled a double-double with 33 assists and had a career-high 16 digs. Fellow sophomore Jasmin Hubbard tallied 13 digs and Barker added 11.
 
The Lady Bears are led by Browne, who has totaled 144 kills (2.48 kps), while Barker has recorded 103 kills (2.06 kps). Daniels leads the team in service aces with 17 and Wallace has added 16. Wallace leads Morgan State with 527 assists (9.09 apg). She has tallied 1,215 career assists and is now seven shy of moving into ninth-place all-time at Morgan State.
 
Defensively Morgan State has been led by Hubbard, who has collected 222 digs (3.83 dpg) and Barker is adding 124 digs (2.48). Browne leads the team with 36 blocks and Daniels has tallied 30 blocks.
 
Maryland Eastern Shore (16-6, 3-0 MEAC), winners of two straight and five of its last six matches, is coming off a 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 25-12) sweep of visiting Hampton last Saturday. The Lady Hawks will visit Coppin State on Thursday, Oct. 12, before taking on Morgan State.
 
Iva Vujosevic led MDES with a match-high 14 kills, five digs, two service aces and hit for a .478, while Rachel Kayongo hit for a .476 and added 13 kills, two digs and a block. Ivana Blazevic collected a match-high 36 assists and had two service aces, while Lucia Babic totaled a team-high eight digs.
 
The Lady Hawks are led by Vujosevic, who has a team-leading 271 kills (3.35 kps), while Babic has totaled 230 kills (2.84 kps) and Kayongo has recorded 205 kills (2.44 kps). Babic leads MDES with 39 blocks, while Blazevic and Vujosevic have 38 and 37 blocks, respectively. Blazevic has collected 634 assists (8.81 aps), while Maja Jankovic has a team-leading 266 digs (3.37 dps).
 
Friday's contest will be the 63rd all-time meeting between the two teams with Morgan State holding a 42-20 series advantage. MDES has won three of the last four meetings, including last season's series sweep, which the Lady Hawks would win both contests by a score of 3-0.
