BALTIMORE, Md. -- Junior guard
Tiwian Kendley scored a game high 21 points to help lead the Morgan State Bears to an 82-53 victory over the North Carolina A&T Aggies tonight at Hill Field House.
Kendley, who returned from missing seven games due to a foot injury, wasted little time getting back into the swing of things.
"I knew I was going to come back and make an impact," said Kendley, who entered the game averaging 22.7 ppg. "But it wasn't just me out there, it was everybody fighting together as a team with one of our soldiers down. That's what we have to do. Pick it up and keep it moving until (
Phillip Carr) gets back."
Carr (19.2 ppg, 9.6 rpg) was sidelined due to a foot injury.
Morgan State (7-10, 4-0) started the game well and never let their foot off the gas. The Aggies led the game only twice this night. Both of those times occurred in the first two minutes of the game. The rest of the time was dominated by the Bears.
After Davaris McGowens put the Aggies up 4-3 on a lay-up early, the Bears outscored them 16-3 using a couple of three-pointers from
Antonio Gillespie. A lay-up from
David Syfax (13 pts) gave the Bears a 19-7 advantage with 12:07 left in the first half.
North Carolina A&T (1-15, 0-5 MEAC) never drew closer than 11 points the rest of the game.
Even in the second half when they pushed to within 51-40 on Amari Hamilton's three-pointer with 14:40 left, Morgan State responded strongly by outscoring the Aggies 20-7 in a 8:27 stretch of the game.
Kendley's three-pointer gave the Bears a 71-47 advantage with 6:13 remaining in the game. It would be stretched to a 30-point margin near game's end.
The consistency in their game was vital to success according to head coach
Todd Bozeman.
"We just wanted to keep playing," Bozeman said. "It's a long season, so you just want the kids to develop good habits. The only way you can do that is try to stay focused and not play the score, but play the game the way we intend to play the game."
"Just continuing to stay focused throughout the whole game, said senior forward
Kyle Thomas, who contributed 17 points. "We did some good things in the first half. In the second half, we just needed to stay on them to make sure our stuff is good, preparing for the next game."
Sophomore
Martez Cameron recorded a career high 12 assists and six points in the game.
Aaron Scales led the Aggies with 14 points, while Amari Hamilton added 11.
The next game for the Bears is on the road as they hit Savannah, Georgia on Saturday, January 21 to take on the Savannah State Tigers. This will be the first stop in a four-game road trip.
Bear Note:
Todd Bozeman needs just one more victory to become Morgan State's all-time winningest coach. He has 166 wins which is tied with Nathaniel Frazier (166-121).
