Howard Sweeps Morgan State In Battle of Unbeatens

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 29, 2016)-Khaila Donaldson recorded a match-high 13 kills and Dominique Cleggett added nine, as the visiting Howard Lady Bison swept Morgan State 3-0 (25-12, 25-11, 25-18) in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division contest on Thursday night at Hill Field House.

The defending MEAC champion Lady Bison improved to 13-5 and 3-0 in the MEAC to remain in first-place in the league standings, while Morgan State (2-15, 2-1 MEAC) fell to second and had its two-match winning streak snapped.

A year ago both teams entered this very contest unbeaten in league play and it was Morgan State which walked away with a 3-0 mark. Howard would regroup and win its next 13 matches to claim both the division and championship titles.

This time it was the Lady Bears who would dominate the contest. Howard would finish the match with 37 kills and a hitting percentage of .290, while Morgan State was limited to 18 kills on 88 attempts for a -.011 percentage. The Lady Bears were held to just three kills and a -.174 hitting percentage in the second set.

Katherine Broussard and Morgan Marlbrough each finished with a match-high 12 digs and Tamia Dockery had a match-high 27 assists, as Howard improved to 31-36 all-time against Morgan State.

The Lady Bears were led by Haley McClure, who totaled six kills and Victoria Turnbough finished with five. Keana Browne and Natashia Barker had four and three kills, respectively, to account for the rest of Morgan's offensive production. Jasmine Hubbard collected 10 digs and Roi Wallace had 18 assists.

Howard came out strong recording 14 and 13 kills, respectively in the first two sets. The Lady Bison had hitting percentages of .355 and .357 in the first two sets. Morgan State tallied five kills in the opening set for a -.032 percentage.

In the third set, the host Lady Bears used a 4-0 run to take a 9-7 lead, but they would once again be plagued by giving up multiple points to an opponent. After a kill by McClure gave Morgan State a 14-13 advantage, Howard would counter with seven straight points to take a 21-14 lead and eventually win 25-18.

Morgan State will take to the road next Thursday, Oct. 6, when they travel to Princess Anne, Md. to take on the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. First serve is at 7 p.m. at Hytche Athletic Center.
