BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 14, 2016)-Aleksandra Kazala had a match-high 16 kills and a team-high eight digs to pace the visiting American Eagles, who spoiled Morgan State's home opener on Wednesday evening at Hill Field House.
Morgan State fell to 0-11 on the season, while American ended a three-match losing skid and improved to 7-5. Wednesday's contest was the first meeting between the two teams in four seasons.
Shannon Webb added eight kills, while Kennedy Etheridge recorded a match-high 37 assists to go with five digs and a .750 hitting percentage with three kills on four attempts for the Eagles, who remained unbeaten in 27 meetings against Morgan State.
Morgan State was led by Natashia Barker, who tallied a team-high 12 kills and Keana Browne finished with nine. Victoria Turnbough and Roi Wallace each had a match-high nine digs, while Wallace also finished with 26 assists and three kills out of five attempts for a .600 hitting percentage.
American finished the match with a 6.0-5.0 blocking advantage over Morgan State. Etheridge led the Eagles with three blocks, including one solo, while Vela McBride had two solo blocks. The Lady Bears were led by Browne, who finished with three blocks, including two solos.
The Lady Bears travel to Richmond, Va. this weekend to compete in the VCU Invitational (Sept. 16-17), hosted by Virginia Commonwealth. Morgan State will face Middle Tennessee State on Friday at 11 a.m., before taking on Liberty later in the day at 3 p.m. The Lady Bears close out the tournament on Saturday at noon with a match-up against the host Rams.
