Andrews leads Morgan State Past Savannah State, 35-24

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Morgan State quarterback Chris Andrews led an efficient and balanced attack to close the season with a 35-24 victory over Savannah State on a sunny Saturday afternoon at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.

The win snapped a string of six consecutive losses that started on Oct. 15 against Hampton.

Morgan State (3-8, 3-5 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) also extended its winning streak against Savannah State to 9-0, and posted its first road win since defeating Delaware State on Oct. 3, 2015 in Dover.

Anderson passed for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and had 50 yards on 11 carries.

Blake Dever passed for 226 yards and two TDs for the Tigers, but had a costly turnover at the beginning of the second half.

Dever was picked off by Tra Revell and the Bears converted the turnover into points when freshman quarterback DeAndre Harris tossed a 4-yard TD to a wide open Grayling Harrison. It was Harrison's second TD of the day and extended the Bears cushion to 27-10 early in the third quarter.

Savannah State (3-7, 3-5) would not go quietly. Dever led the Tigers down the field and caught the Bears in a personnel adjustment (illegal substitution penalty) when he tossed a sideline pass to wideout Derek Kirkland who raced down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown. The Tigers trailed 27-17 with 7:31 left in the third quarter.

Lamont Brown III had his best game of the season and broke the game open just before the close of the third quarter. The redshirt senior broke off a 44 yd-run and capped off the drive with a 4-yard TD run, for his second TD of the game to make it 33-17. Brown had scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.

The Bears came close to scoring another touchdown early in the fourth quarter.

Anderson tossed a deep, high floating pass and senior wideout Thomas Martin came down with it before being pushed out at the 2.  However, Savannah's defense stonewalled the Bears on a 4th and goal from the 2. On the ensuing SSU possession, sophomore Darius Johnson stopped Tiger running back Archon Spaulding in the endzone for a safety to give the Bears a 35-17 lead.

The Tigers took advantage of a soft zone when Dever tossed a 15-yd TD pass to Kendarius Dukes for the final points of the game.

The Bears ran 79 plays for 387 yards, including 229 yards on the ground. The Tigers were held to 75 rushing yards, but finished with 304 total yards.

Morgan State had a tough start to the ballgame. Chris Andrews was picked off during the first drive by Mulik Simmons, and the Tigers pounced. On just their third play from scrimmage, Cantrell Frazier took a handoff around the left side before turning it upfield for a 22-yard TD run. The Tigers led 7-0.

Andrews threw a pair of 5-yard touchdowns, hitting Landen Malbrough in the first quarter and Grayling Harrison early in the second to put the Bears ahead for good.
