Women's Basketball Defeats Delaware State, 56-49

BALTIMORE, Md. (Jan. 9, 2016)-Braennan Farrar recorded a game-high 18 points and added a career-best eight steals to lead Morgan State past visiting Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) game on Saturday afternoon at Hill Field House.

Morgan State improved to 4-11 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC, while Delaware State (3-11, 0-1 MEAC) dropped its third straight.

The win marked the third straight for Morgan State over the Hornets and the fifth out of the last six meetings. Delaware State still leads the all-time series, 40-33.

Tykyrah Williams came off the bench to add 15 points and six rebounds, while Chelsea Mitchell also came off the bench and finished with 10 points and four steals, as the Lady Bears held a 15-10 advantage in steals over Delaware State. Zuri White pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists to go with two steals and four points.

Delaware State was led by NaJai Pollard, who shot 8-for-11 from the floor to finish with 16 points. Pollard also hauled in a game-high nine rebounds and tied teammate Bri Justice (six points) for team-high honors with three steals. Amber Bogard scored 10 of her 13 points in the second half.

The Hornets shot 46.7 percent (21-of-45) for the game, including 2-of-12 (16.7 percent) from three-point range. Delaware State shot 71 percent from the charity line, but only got there seven times, connecting on five.

Morgan State shot 32 percent (18-of-56) from the floor and knocked down four of its 10 (40 percent) three-point attempts. The Lady Bears went to the free throw line 23 times and converted on 16 for 69.6 percent.

The visiting Hornets opened up with a 7-0 spurt and took their largest lead of the game at 13-2 after a layup by Pollard with 3:57 left in the first quarter. Morgan State slowly chipped away and put together a 13-4 run which carried over into the second quarter to pull even the score at 15 all after a jumper by Farrar with 8:40 to play in the first half.

A jumper by N'Kayah Kersey reclaimed the lead for the guests at 17-15 at the 6:50 mark. From there on, it would be all Morgan State, as the Lady Bears would outscore the Hornets 19-6 in the period. Morgan State would score the next 10 points to take a 25-17 lead and closed out the period on a 15-4 run to take a 30-21 halftime lead.

The Lady Bears would take their largest lead of the game (nine points) after a layup by Lexus Spears gave the hosts a 43-34 advantage with 8:35 to play. Delaware State would stick around and behind a 13-8 run over the next seven minutes, the Hornets pulled within 51-47 after a layup by Bogard with 1:42 to play. But that would be as close as the Hornets would get, as Morgan State ended the game hitting five of six free throws for the win.

Morgan State will take to the road for the first time in 2016, when it visits the Lady Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) on Monday, Jan. 11. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. at the Hytche Athletic Center in Princess Anne, Md.

The contest will also be the first MEAC road game of the season for the Lady Bears. UMES leads the all-time series, 40-34, but the Lady Bears have won four of the past five meetings, including last year's season sweep.
