Box Score BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 12, 2015)-The Morgan State volleyball team closed out the 2015 Maddie Bingaman Tournament with a 3-1 (28-26, 17-25, 25-16, 25-19) non-conference win over Fordham on Saturday morning at RAC Arena on the campus of the University of Maryland Baltimore County. It was the Lady Bears' first win over the Rams in two tries.
Keana Browne tallied a match-high 17 kills to lead the Lady Bears. Evely Macedo recorded a double-double with 13 kills and added 12 digs, while Arianna Hayden also earned double-double with 12 kills and a match-high 13 digs. Carmen Fernandez hit for a career- and match-high .833, while totaling a career-best five kills to go with her match-high 44 assists and nine digs.
Fordham (3-7) was led by Olivia La Porta, who finished with nine kills and had a match-high three service aces. Breanna Jones and Sarah Skelton each totaled seven kills. Clarissa Cartledge had a team-high 12 digs and Brennan Delsing finished with 10. Emily Fronk and Abigail Konovodoff shared the setter duties, collecting 22 and 15 assists, respectively.
Morgan State (2-9), which recorded a season-high 54 kills, finished with a hitting percentage of .216. The Lady Bears tallied eight service aces, behind a match-high three aces from Hayden. However, they did commit 11 serving errors. The Rams finished with a .198 hitting percentage with 45 kills on 121 attempts and 21 attack errors.
After falling behind 4-1 early in the set, the Lady Bears used a 7-4 spurt to even the score at 8-8. Several times the Lady Bears would fall behind by two points before evening the score at 19 apiece. Morgan State would take a 24-23 lead on a kill by Macedo, but Fordham would not go away easy. It would take four set point opportunities before Morgan State finally pulled out the win. A kill by Fernandez put the Lady Bears ahead, 27-26 and Hayden closed the door with a service ace for the win.
Morgan State watched the Rams jump out to a 6-1 lead in Set 2, before pulling within 6-4. The Rams then went on a 13-8 run to a 19-12 lead. The Lady Bears would get within 17-21 after a mini 5-2 spurt, but would get no closer. The Rams would score the final four points of the set for the 25-17 win.
The Lady Bears scored the first four points in Set 3 and had built a 7-3 advantage. The Rams got within two points five times the last at 14-12, before Morgan State pushed its lead to 23-14 with a 9-2 run. Morgan would win the set on a kill by Fernandez for the 25-16 win.
In Set 4, Morgan State took a 5-2 lead and increased its advantage to 12-7, before the Rams used a 4-0 run to pull within 12-11. A service ace by Shayna Hunt-Colon gave the Lady Bears an 18-15 lead. The Rams would go on a 3-1 run to make it a 19-18 score. The Lady Bears would close out the set and the match scoring the next five points in the midst of a 6-1 spurt for the 25-19 victory.
The Lady Bears and Fordham each recorded 8.0 blocks for the match. Morgan State was led by Monette Daniels' team-high four blocks, while Hayden, Fernandez and Browne all had three blocks apiece.
The Lady Bears will be off until next week when they compete in the Delaware Invitational in Newark, Del. (Sept. 18-19). It will be the fourth and final regular season tournament for the Lady Bears this season. Morgan State will take on the host Delaware Blue Hens on Friday at 1 p.m., before facing Sacred Heart at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Bears will close out the tournament with a 10 a.m. match on Saturday against local foe Loyola-Maryland. All matches will be played at Bob Carpenter Center on the University of Delaware campus.
