Morgan State Falls To Host UMBC In Maddie Bingaman Tournament Opener

BALTIMORE, Md. (Sept. 10, 2015)-Morgan State's Evely Macedo made her season debut for Morgan State on Friday morning and tallied a match-high 18 kills. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough, as the Lady Bears dropped a 3-1 decision (25-20, 25-14, 20-25, 25-22) to host (UMBC) in the opener of the Maddie Bingaman Tournament at RAC Arena.
 
UMBC (4-4) improved to 40-2 all-time against Morgan State with the win. The Retrievers became just the second team this season to surrender a set victory to the Lady Bears.
 
Morgen Makenzie led three UMBC players in double figures for kills, finishing with 15. Maddie Schneider tallied 12 kills and Krystal Williams added 10. Krytsia Negron fell shy of a double-double with 36 assists and a team-high nine digs. Negron also had a match-high three service aces.
 
Macedo, who was unavailable for the team's first eight matches, returned to the starting lineup and immediately made her presence felt. Her 18 kills set a career high, surpassing the previous high of 14 last season against George Mason. Macedo also added two digs, a solo block and two service aces, one of which won the third set for Morgan State.  
 
Morgan State (1-8) also got 10 kills from Keana Browne and Arianna Hayden added nine kills and had a match-high three service aces. Samantha Prescott finished with a match-high 10 digs, while Carmen Fernandez notched a match-high and season-best 37 assists.
 
Morgan State finished the match with 45 kills and a team hitting percentage of .225, both season bests. The Lady Bears had a season- and match-high 10 service aces, but committed 14 service errors. Morgan State held a 7.0-3.0 advantage over UMBC in blocks. Fernandez led the way with a match- and career-high five blocks, including a solo block.
 
UMBC totaled 50 kills and had a hitting percentage of .314. The Retrievers had six service aces and committed seven errors.
 
Next up for the Lady Bears will be a non-conference match against Rider at 3 p.m.
