Box Score COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Aug. 28, 2015)-The Morgan State Lady Bears volleyball team opened up the 2015 season on Friday afternoon on the road against the University of Maryland in the Maryland Invite. Morgan State would suffer a 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-20) loss to the Terrapins at XFINITY Pavilion. The loss marked the fourth consecutive season opening loss for the Lady Bears, who also fell to 0-7 all-time against Maryland.
Keana Browne led the Lady Bears (0-1) with a career-best seven kills and added two blocks, while Haley McClure had five kills. Arianna Hayden and Carmen Fernandez each tallied four kills. Hayden tied Browne for team-high honors with two blocks and Fernandez also finished with 15 assists. Samantha Prescott led the team with nine digs and Hayden added eight.
The Terrapins (1-0) were led by Adreene Elliott, who recorded a match-high nine kills. Hailey Murray and Liz Twilley each had eight kills. Amy Dion notched a match-high 15 digs, while Whitney Craigo had a match-high 21 assists.
Maryland finished with 38 kills on 85 attempts for a .294 hitting percentage. The host Terrapins were able to overcome 13 attack errors and nine service errors, by recording a team-best 14 kills in the opening set and had a team-high of .478 hitting percentage in the second set. The Terrapins also had six service aces and held a 7.0-3.0 blocking advantage over Morgan State. Ashlyn MacGregor led the Terps with a match-high five blocks and Elliott finished with three.
Morgan State recorded 23 kills on 77 attempts, but committed 19 errors for a hitting percentage of .052. The Lady Bears' troubles also came from the serving line, where they recorded just one ace and had 10 service errors.
The Lady Bears return to action later this afternoon when they take on Kent State at 3 p.m. This will be Kent State's first match of the Maryland Invite. The Golden Flashes hold a 2-0 all-time series lead over Morgan State.
