Lady Bears Close Preseason Camp With Win Over Alumni Team, 3-2

BALTIMORE, Md. (August 22, 2015)-The Morgan State volleyball team wrapped up its 2015 preseason camp on Saturday with the third and final session of the Ramona Riley-Bozier volleyball camp. The camp which was geared toward teams, had seven teams participate, including two junior varsity squads.

The Lady Bears then closed out the afternoon with the annual 'Orange & Blue' Alumni match at Hill Field House. The Lady Bears would battle back from a 2-1 deficit and a point away from defeat in the fourth set to earn a 3-2 (25-20, 28-30, 15-25, 29-27, 15-13) win over the Morgan State Alumni team.

"I wish today wasn't the end of preseason. I really wish we had another week," said Morgan State head coach and Ramona Riley-Bozier. "I feel like we actually need another week to really get our freshmen where we need them to be and getting them on the pace that we are trying to run. It is what it is and we have a few days left to get ready.

"Unfortunately by me recruiting kids that are not from Maryland, it's kind of tough to get them all to be here and to come back and play," said Riley-Bozier of the alumni match. But it was nice that we had enough on the court to make it a competitive event for the 2015 team and we kind of gave them a run for their money."

After the Lady Bears took the opening set with a 25-20 victory, Riley Bozier and the MSU Alumni squad would claim the next two sets by the scores of 30-28 and a 25-15 thumping in Set 3 to take a 2-1 lead.

The Alumni team held a 24-22 advantage in the fourth set, but was unable to pull out the win. The 2015 Lady Bears would stave off three match points to eventually earn a 29-27 win. Morgan State would take that momentum into the fifth set, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. The Alumni team would score the next four points to even the score at 5-5. A service error on the Lady Bears tied the score at 7-7, before the Lady Bears scored three straight to take a 10-7 advantage. The Alumni team would not go away, pulling within 14-13, but an attack error on the Alumni team would give the Lady Bears the 15-13 victory and the 3-2 match win.

"They shouldn't have won," said Riley-Bozier of the Lady Bears comeback victory. "We (Alumni Team) were in a position where we had a match-point situation and the ball was set and there was a joust at the net and they (2015 Lady Bears) ended up winning the joust and that's what got them back in the match. Just like with anything else, we were up and we needed to put them away. But from a coaches perspective it was nice to see they fought and really wanted to win."

Morgan State opens up the 2015 campaign in College Park, Md., to take part in the Maryland Invite, hosted by the University of Maryland (Aug. 28-29).
