MSU's Swain, Walker Take Home Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year Honors at Awards Banquet

BALTIMORE, Md. -- Morgan State University track/cross country student-athlete Ishakeema Swain and football standout Herb Walker Jr. were recognized as the female and male student-athletes of the year at the 29th Annual Athletics Awards Banquet at the Calvin & Tina Tyler Ballroom in the MSU Student Center. Head football coach Lee Hull was selected as the Coach of the Year.

Senior Ishakeema Swain is in the midst of putting the wraps on a tremendous record-breaking career and season as a member of the MSU cross country and track and field teams. Swain earned All-MEAC second team honors during the indoor season in the 5000-meter run and third team honors in as a member of the distance medley team. She set the school record in the 3000-meter run in a time of 10:05.01 at the Geigengack Invitational (2/8) and won the 3000-meter run in a time of 10:23.47 at the Princeton New Year's Invitational during the indoor season. Swain set the school record in the 5000-meter run in a time of 17:22.05 on Day 1 of the Florda Relays, breaking her own previous record and won the 1500-meter run at the Hampton Relays. Swain began the year helping the cross country team to a second consecutive MEAC runner-up finish and  earned All-MEAC honors, following her fifth-place finish (19:20.80) during the MEAC championship and won gold in the steeplechase at the MEAC Outdoor Championship.

MSU runningback Herb Walker Jr. helped lead the Bears to its first MEAC title in 30 years and its first FCS Playoff berth in history. In his first start of the season at Holy Cross, the sophomore carried the ball 20 times for a career high 271 yards and two touchdowns. In doing so, he became the school's all-time single game rushing leader. Walker finished the season ranked No. 2 in the MEAC (No. 14 in FCS) in rushing yards (1,408 - single season school record), No. 12 in nation in rushing yards per game (117.3). Walker, who was on the 2014 Walter Payton Award Watch List, scored 15 TDs (13 rushing/2 receiving) and ranked T-No. 2 in the MEAC in scoring (90 pts).

When the 2014 season came to a close after a historic run to the FCS Playoffs, coach Lee Hull's team had not only made one of the most improbable runs in MEAC history, but it also cemented its place in Morgan State lore by setting or tying 57 season or game records, including Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and school records. In just his first season as a head coach, Hull has helped Morgan State improve from a 5-7 regular season in 2013 to a 7-5 regular season in 2014. The turnaround in the regular season marked the Bears first winning season since 2009, and matched the most wins by the school since recording a 7-5 record in 2002. Picked last (9th) in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll, Morgan State captured a share of the MEAC Title with a 6-2 conference record, marking its first conference championship since 1979. The Bears not only clinched a share of the title but they also earned the league's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs, its first Division I playoff berth in school history.
